Retaining private plate when selling car
We are about to advertise our car for sale, but we still have our own registration on it.
Am I right in saying I can either go ahead and send the appropriate form and V5C off to the DVLA and wait for it, or I could send the form with V5C when we've sold it and put the new owner on the form and still keep my wife as the Grantee?

The only way you're guaranteed to legally keep your plate is to retain it before selling the car. You shouldn't sell the car until you have received the V5 back.
You may be able to arrange with the purchaser to allow you to keep the plate, however as soon as the car is sold the plate becomes legally theirs so its down to them!

You must put your plate on retention before you sell your car. Dvla will issue you a new registration and replacement tax disc. The fee you pay also includes the cost of putting in your new car. If you sell the car without retention you have legally lost the plate to the new owner.
