Default Scamming in France.

Young lad I know here (he works for the builders' merchants and delivers all my plasterboard, etc), was telling me this morning about being scammed.

He bought a Renault Kangoo for €2000, seemed in good nick, drove OK etc etc.

Drove it home and it died the next day.

Local garage tell him it's the high pressure diesel pump, quote €1500

So he rings the seller, tells him the car is no good and says he wants his money back and that the seller should find an idiot to sell it to.

The seller responds, "No thanks, I've already found an idiot and he bought it", then laughs.

So the lad tells him he'll come round with some big mates, to which the seller responds, "Then I shall call the Gendarmes and make a complaint about you. You know I am an Arab? I shall cry racism, and you KNOW they will believe me, and you will be in a world of hurt..."

It goes on over here, just the same as in the UK.

If he is stuck with the van, tell him to sack off the local mechanic and send the old pump to "Diesel Bob" for reconditioning/repairs. http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/
I have used him three times now....good work at a reasonable price and he will do mail order to/from France no problem.

Yanmar digger pump refurb....local diesel specialist - Three grand!!, Bob - £800.
Landrover TD4 injectors x4 - local place, over a grand. Bob - £400 iirc.
Honda single cylinder stationary engine pump rebuild - never even asked locally, Bob did it for £130.

France, eh? Was it sold by a car dealer?
They have an equivalent to our sale of goods act? Here's an English translation. http://www.brittany-internet.com/Bri...9/Default.aspx

It seems to be broadly similar to our own consumer laws.
If it was bought from a private individual, he's got very little recourse in law unless he can prove breach of contract of sale.

I'm in the process of dealing with a car dealer myself over a car I bought recently. It developed a major fault 6 weeks after buying it (repair cost £2.8K). I rejected the car under part (ii) section(14) of the sale of goods act 1979. The dealer has promised a replacement car by Friday 18th Oct or a refund. I'm not holding my breath.
Going through the court system means I can also claim for damages and consequential losses.

Going through the courts in France is a complete ****-take. It costs an absolute fortune - even if you "win" you are normally still left out of pocket and it takes literally years to get anywhere. The only people who benefit are the lawyers.

My neighbour got the local garage to fit a new timing belt to her car. A couple of days later the tensioner pulley came off on the autoroute pretty much destroying the engine. The mechanic refused liability so she took him to court. Her car was stranded at a recovery debot hundreds of miles away from her home, the case dragged on for 2 years, she had to buy a new car in the meantime and despite "winning" is still several grand out of pocket.
This is not an uncommon story here.
