How do I find new staff?
Need to take on some new staff and have not got a clue where to start, everyone that works for me has come by word of mouth or actually knocked on my door asking for a job, I recently took on a school leaver for a couple of days a week and he has no common sense and although hes done ok in his exams its as if his heads empty. Our place of business is based in an area with almost zero jobs available but everyone is on benefits and don't want to consider taking a minimum wage job.
I know that i need to avoid the job centre but where do people look for jobs online? : jobsite/ monster? I don't have a clue as I have never had to find a job or hire people for a job. I will consider anyone

Tried the local rag? At least you know the applicants will have made the effort rather than being forced by an agency or job center to claim their benefits. Certainly be my first call

As above, if hard manual labour defiantly consider an Eastern European....
Just the bank holiday Monday gone I had approx. 7,000 chickens that were due to go off to slaughter. The gangs of "catchers" are all either Latvian or Polish. You will never guess how long it took them to catch and load up 7,000 chickens......
Lorry turns up at 10pm, gang of 8 Latvian catchers arrive as planned at midnight, by 2:40am all birds have been crated and loaded onto the arctic and gone. They don't just work, they literally run with the birds back and forth to get the job done and dusted. I've said this before on a similar thread that's cropped up in the past, you will never get an English team doing a job quicker and as effective as them.

We have 100 poles work at pine of our distribution centres
Hard work is all they know
Language can be a problem untill they know what they are doing
But graft is no problem
I have a friend who owns a sawmill and 4 share a caravan and work 60 hours per week and save the money up to take home to Poland to support their family's and build lavish houses
Very polite and obedient and show respect too

What sort of job is it, and where?
It might be easier to give advice knowing the above.
Advertising on the main jobsites makes sense as anyone seriously searching will look on those.
Depending on your location, can you not advertise in any places around you? Does your area have a 'free paper' that gets delivered that you could post the advert in?
Again it depends upon your location, but have you got an advert for your available roles displayed outside your business? That is how we post up any vacancies we have.

There is a job site called inneed, I'll double check when I'm at work. The site looks shocking compared to Monster etc. but it's free to post jobs and they come up on google searches.
Whenever I need more staff now I post a job on there. Get a much better response than the local paper or job centre.
With regards to the lack of common sense, it seems to be a common trait in many youngsters for manual labour jobs. My advice is be brutal, set a short trial period, 3 months or so and if they fail to grasp what you need to do, terminate the trial and look again.

thanks for the suggestion of indeed, I listed an advertisement yesterday and have 10 applications emailed by 5pm today although I am amazed at the poor spelling in some peoples CV's , I myself can not spell but I know how to use a spell checker in word and gmail! Does everyone write a CV in the format:
- I would really like a job....
- I play football and swim every week
- I went to school.......etc
please get some imagination and determination, don't think I can face sifting through 100's of these.

To be frank I think most people would graft if they were paid four times the wage they were used to, and then after two or three years could afford to buy a house with cash.

That said, I agree that people should make an effort with their spelling, regardless of what job they're applying for.

If the job on offer was a higher paid one/more of a career than a job, then I would expect people would go the extra mile with a CV. As it is a minimum wage job, I'd imagine most of the ones you'll get, will be the standard type you've had so far.
That said, I agree that people should make an effort with their spelling, regardless of what job they're applying for.

I can only imagine that the people you see on TV that have sent out 500 CV's and can not find any job are sending ones just like the ones I have received.
I have a lad working for me at the moment that does not have one qualification, he never went to school but I have found what he is good at and hes quite good at what he now does for me, but he came knocking on my door begging for a job twice in a week so I gave him a chance and hes been with me for over a year.
I really hope this country has not made a army of school leavers who think that they are all going to have a 'Career' I've already met one hopeful whos planning to be an accountant even though he has only just passed his GCSE's

the text of one CV is 6 lines long and has 20 spelling mistakes!

Your grammar and punctuation in your last two paragraphs is quite bad.
Sorry.... I couldn't resist.

and the fact that I as a non speller am amazed at how bad they (the CV's) look should clarify just how bad things have got.
