interesting...

"Still, there is some good news for motorists. The Department
of Transport has issued tough new rules about speed cameras
and where they can be located. Hundreds of speed cameras across
Britain will be taken down and drivers and safety groups are
hailing the move as a major victory.

The new guidelines will outlaw cameras on roads without a
proven accident blackspot. Cameras must be painted yellow and
be clearly visible to drivers from 60 metres in 40mph limits
and 100 metres elsewhere. You can expect the cameras to start
coming down within the next few months."

just read this (carsource) can anybody verify/confirm???

A number of people believe it only applies to police forces that have joined the 'cash for cameras' scheme. Lets hope it is across the board.

Whilst I warmly welcome this, isn't amazing what this government will do to try and remain popular?

After telling us that the majority of people wanted them, they now find that the majority of people are getting nicked by them, in areas where there has never been a road traffic accident, or is ever likely to be one, speed related or not and so they are removing them.

Next thing you know, we will have a transport minister who makes a truthful statement and actually holds a driving license.

good news....(please please sack Byers!)

I got flashed by a Gatso in Shropshire on Sunday...only doing about 48 in a 40 zone.
Very annoying as the ruler marks were on the other side of the road (i.e. i was travelling towards the camera.) and I didn't notice in time.
Anyone know whether this is likely to result in a ticket?

Nick

I bl00dy hope this is true. they just put up a new camera in marlow that is not at an accident blackspot but is near a school, I think this could be more dangerous because of people looking at their speedo that the road? I may be wrong but I must spend more time looking at the speedo and not the road these days

That speed camera in Marlow doesn't have any white markings in the road yet.
The old speed camera in Marlow is breaking the rules as it is obscured by trees.
Still they both are near a school so I can live with their placement. I agree with you about looking at the speedo. I do it every time I come down there now. Still once your past the speed cameras the A404 is there to play on.

Ive seen a mean looking Black Scooby in Marlow - is that yours ?

Near where I live on the Welsh borders, they've started hanging burning tyres around them so you can see them from hundreds of yards away on a clear night............

What a load of bollacks According to Thames Valley "Camera cash converters" police They have said on the local news that they will not be removing any camera housings as they will be reserving the right to keep them in the same locations as they are now due to the fact that if the same road has any problems in the future they can use that camera again and also all the cameras housings will be maintained on regular basis, so they way I interpret this is up yours to the government from TVP and guess what camera is not being used

I have emailed Meridian TV to see if they will put the footage that I have seen on their web site

hurrah and sigh :-\

The government are a bunch of tw@ts ... There is a camera on the way to Junction 8 of the M25 as you go through surbiton etc... great open road with two-lanes, 30mph limit and a _GREEN_ camera... like dark green to blend in with the trees.

If the cameras go I guess they will just make up the shortfall with police and mobile cameras ala Essex.

Yea but Timbo the No*heads in joke factory say that they should remove all Gatso camera housings that don't fall into "government guidelines" i.e. 4 Deaths per road around that location of the camera and multiple crashes

Still the government going back on it's cash machine policies what ever next "more bank hollidays" bringing the price of petrol down

It's all good for the folk's in England, but Scotland will remain the same as the Scottish Parliament has decided not to apply the rule changes here. (must need the money). Who said the Scot's were tight?

I think some off the news papers said that this was a sweetener for the fact that they are going to install another 3000 camera's at the accident black spots painted yellow of course!

Could be called spin but they would never do that would they?

If this doesn't bring in enough money they will just use mobile traps with laser guns to zap you when you are not close enough to see it is a police vehicle and then probably park these on motoway bridges, Northants police apparently find this very profitable on the M1 at the moment.

I bet that there have been over eight "personal injury accidents" THIS YEAR ALONE on the M6 - so be prepared for hundreds of Gatsos appearing there. Oh, and there is the A1, er, A2, er, A3 ...

More spin i am afraid

It has also been stated that signs will not be allowed if there are no cameras - which is clearly bollocks as coming into Norwich there have been a load of new signs in the last couple of months - but I have seen no cameras - mind you that could be due to red shift
