Health Tourism
They are gonna crack down on it by charging a £200 levy on visas.
http://news.sky.com/story/1110819/he...e-200-nhs-levy
But Doctors apparently can't check eligibility even though most countries do some checking. You need a medicare number to get treatment in Australia for example, and you pay a fee if you are on a tourist visa IIRC to cover any health care expenses.
And 'asylum seekers' still get everything free on the taxpayers dime (of course).

You'd be bitching more than you do all ready, if that were possible

I'd like to see us do what the other EC countries do: you pay for it at point of need, then claim it back from your own country.
Then you ONLY get what you have paid for in your own country, and what they allow.
This is another TINY,TINY sop that will do almost nothing to stop the haemorraging of money to foreigners by the NHS.
Cue, the usual suspects to come on in full "Fast Show Politician mode", and say, "No it's not happening, No, it doesn't, No it hasn't etc etc etc.
Denial is just another form of lying.

I don't think anyone is denying it, just the accusation is that one is a 'xenophobe' if one wants to make foreigners pay at point of access.

I heard the Health Secretary this morning stating that this could be a £30m issue...I thought to myself, is that all?? Why allt he fuss then??
Then I read your comments and a realised exactly why they are pretending to do something about this; because it's good politics to appear to demonise immigrants and foreigners!

I see you are already conceeding the argument to those who might actually rely on facts before making statements.

The demonising has nothing to do with the health service, it's just the most recent and convenient vehicle being used by the government and others for that purpose

a) don't have to do anything about the real problems
and
b) can win an election by promising action on immigration.
I have emailed them to let them know that the proof that their scheme is working can be found daily in SN NSR

Health tourism is one of many problems the Government are trying to tackle. The media picks this out and now the Government is demonising. £30million may not sound like a lot to you in the grand scheme of things but this can mean the difference of whether some sick or vulnerable British citizens who have paid their tax and NI all their lives gets treatment or a bed in a ward.
Rather than the Government doing the demonising, perhaps it's the media who have an agenda whilst selling a few more sheets of paper.
