I have to say that it is a particularly offensive word especially in the way that it is often used in what one might expect to be "normal" conversation.

It now seems to be quite acceptable to use it on TV when it used to be virtually forbidden.

For example I saw Sarah Millican the other day and she was using it virtually as a normal conversational word in her attempts to be funny as a comedienne. In actual fact it took away from her performance and it just became boring. She was using it in an attempt to get a cheap laugh but in the end it was not working.

It added up to an admission that she had a weak script and I think most people found it a relief when her act was finished.

Lavatory humour or bad language is never an effective substitute for a poor script.
