Spitfire, Hurricane and Battle of The Atlantic, This Weekend
There will be a flypast by a Hurricane and a Spitfire along the Mersey this weekend.
The event is massive on the Mersey this weekend and the week following.
The headquarters of the battle, The Western Approaches will be open for viewing along with navy ships from many different countries plus many other events, details here.

Some live webcams are on this site..

"Many of the vessels lining the waterfront will be open to visitors and a dramatic Battle of the Mersey will see Royal Marine Commandos carry out a fast-roping rescue exercise involving a Royal Navy helicopter and several warships." Sounds good!

Any chance to see those aircraft and the Lancaster should be treated as unmissable. The debt we owe to all the members of the armed services during WW2 is truly immense and should never be forgotten.

I saw the Spitfire and Hurricane today, although I was too far away to get a photo.
I can never forget the sound of the engines.
They flew up from Shrewsbury and flew down the Mersey east to west to Liverpool.
They went on to Llandudno and then up to Blackpool where they are stabling overnight.
Tomorrow (Sun) they leave Blackpool at 1600 to do a flypast over Bury at 1610.

Some years ago I was doing some experimental flying to do with radar equipment etc. Our senior officer in charge of flying was great mates with the Rolls Royce test pilot who used to visit our station so that he could gat a bit of instrument flying practice before his annual examination.
He used to arrive in the Rolls Royce Spitfire and park it for the day. I asked my boss if there was a chance I could fly the Spitfire while he was there since I had been trained on the North American Harvard which was a single engine fighter type with a biggish engine.
The RR pilot said yes of course he can the next time I come over there.
Unfortunately my boss was posted to another job before that happened and the RR pilot never visited us again! That was one of the biggest disappointments I can remember when it came to flying. It was one of my biggest ambitions to fly a Spitfire. After all those years I still have not recovered from the disappointment! I'll never get such a chance again.

On the subject of the Lancaster I went to Elvington a couple of months ago for the day and visited the bomber command exhibition there. It's very well done and you get a real sense of the immense task undertaken for many years and the debt we owe all those that took part from those building the planes and bombs to those who flew them and in them. Brave doesn't really describe it.
