Going to London from the North by car. Alternative to drving into the city?
Driving down to London on the A1 tomorrow. Having done it before, i'm not keen on going into the city by car. Whats a good choice. Ideally a cheap, safe car park in North London next to a tube station, then get the tube into central London.

would second that (assume u would be going down the A1 then A41)
I have used Stanmore tube before, but just parked on the road (but it was a sunday...)

Park up and get the train from Stevenage which is just off the A1, really easy to get too. Plus Stevenage is served by more trains and have faster services in and out Kings Cross. From there you can get the Metropolitan, Circle, Picadilly, Victoria and Northern Line tubes.

getting to Brent Cross can be a nightmare from the A1 as you have to deal with the North Circular
by far the best bet is to get to the A1/M25 junction
take a left - towards M11/Dartford, next junction take a right to Cockfosters
2 miles down the road from the M25, Cockfosters Tube, large cheap carpark and walk straight to the Piccadilly line where there will be a London bound train waiting for you

swings and roundabouts really
however what I would say is that the Cockfoster option means you are already on the Tube network -- and the Piccadilly line goes right to the centre of London
and you WILL have a train waiting for you at the station
the actual journey time (into KX) will be quicker on the Potters Bar over
ground though -- but you have to change to the underground and potentially wait for a train
the big advantage of Stevenage is that on the way home you get right out of all the sh1te traffic that "can" hang around the M25 and the Hatfield Tunnel and straight on the A1 going North - which is appealing
