new MGs - what the smeg?
#1
what is it about these things, ZS/ZR or whatever, like a scurge on our roads!!!
just what is it about driving around in a ten year old Honda Civic with a fake Impreza wing that's so appealing! Okay, maybe that's not entirely fair, but there seem to be loads of these guys (always in fake wr blue I might add) that like to hang around roughly 2.6mm from my bumper. Cashing in on the old MG myth that's all, if these things still had 'Rover' attached to all angles, then they wouldn't be touched by anyone. (which is ironic as they are the same thing with tweaks only)
Spooky that, the power of a bit of plastic attached to the car!

Im with you on this. See loads of the buggers round here. To be fair they don't look too shabby. But at the end of the day you could buy the standard "car" add loads of aftermarket goodies to it and it'd be a better car for less dosh. But would still be a bloody ROVER!! Has anyone on here driven em?? Would like to know if they're any good..

Had the very same discussion about this a few weeks back with Scoobyjawa, Scott W and a few others. The same thing happens around the Bracknell area, most tend to sit 15 or so microns off the back bumper.
I said it last time and i'll say it again, at the end of the day they are all old mans Rovers and you cant polish a turd. IMHO.

some hypocrisy shurely :0
if you buy a scoob and spend time and money puting on trick lights and bean can exhaust etc - OK
If you buy a british car with some 'extras' you are a **** with no taste and a bolton boy **** ?
Agreed mgs aren't as capable as your wrx and p1 etc but people are buying them for roughly the same reason - more fun than a standard mondeo vectra escort etc
so whats the diff! - have you actually driven any of these cars or are you just slagging them because your hypocrites
(I refer you to the picnic tables and gold wheels some of the Scoobs are inflicting on the world)

*sigh*
At least they come with Quad headlights - and people dont have to "bolt-on" morettes because the std car looks so fugly.
It seems anyone who doesnt buy an impreza isn't allowed to enjoy their car. Its only "valid" if they spend a fortune on particular mods for a particular car.

Good point dsmith - I personally think they look pretty sweet and am tempted to get a 2nd hand one to tide me over for a year or so. Pretty good performance too when u get to the 160 model.

Can't stand Rovers and they are Rovers, simple
If someone wants one (like my girlfiriend ) then fair enough, you're welcome to them. The point is, get off my bumper, wannabe.

"wannabe"
wannabe what ?
wannabe buying britsh
wannabe buying 60 years of heritage ()
wannabe sticking 2 fingers up at BMW
wannabe not having a body shell made from kit-kat wrapper
wannabe not be seen as ram-raiding drug dealer from Manchester
wannabe not wearing a baseball cap.
wannabe not have a sh*t interior
wannabe not driving a jap rally wannabe
I've never had a problem with the MGs - but then the only people I can remember "trying it on" recently are a celica GT4 (which was entirely mutual) and BMW rep mobiles.
Maybe, its your car/driving that incites this behaviour ?
I've seen at least as much knobby driving from Impreza/Evos and the like as any other car. (with the exception of XR2s and XR3s)

When I say wannabe - it applies to the "wannabes" who want to prove how good and fast their MG is next to a scoob, they aren't. Yet. I also apply this to the ZT/ZR/ZS varients.
As for my encounters with them - was it my driving? Well, if they were pissed off that I was driving to the letter of the law and they aren't happy to do this then maybe that does incite their behaviour, but my experiences with them have being with me doing 30 in a 30 and 40 in a 40 with them sitting up my boot. This is not an isolated incident in Bracknell and happens quite often with these cars round this way. I am not the only one (scoob drivers and not) that has also noticed this.

wannabe buying walnut dashboards
wannabe sat in a drab cabin
wannabe accepted by the Max Power brigade (and failing)
wannabe a hairdresser
wannabe at home with the pipe and slippers
wannabe left for dust at the lights

But they're exactly how MG started ?
Mildy modified mainstream Morris and Cowley Saloons is how MG started in the 20's
"Real MGs" - I have an MG Midget which was a selction of the worst bits of BL parts bin that could be found (with the exception of the 1275 A series) bolted together in an overweight body. The fact it has only 2 seats would seem the main diff between it and any historic or modern 4 door MG.

Started . . . yes. Rover now use it as an excuse to fob off Maxed Rovers, its a discrace.
We have an MGB GT which is a far better car than the rebadged Rovers could ever be.
If Rover want to revive the MG image then they need to make it different and better. And different doesn't mean a few basic suspension mods and spoliers.

Dunk - if you are a wannabe hairdresser surely you must drive a Clio ?? Errrr, i'll get me coat
Seriously, I also admire MG for what they have done with the (R)Over 25, 45, 65s, but they are not my cup of tea, and in Bracknell, I have had alot of the blue ZS' an inch from my bumper.

yeah, what a classic the MG B is. Morris Minor suspension with a Marina engine in a badly built coupe-shaped bodyshell.
Obviously one of these is a load better than having one of the best V6 engines around in a a tidy handling, nicely detailed and well priced package. Poor old Mr Morris must be turning in his grave
Some people really are blinkered by their own sense of self-satisfaction and ego.

My "uncle" has recently restored one of the early MGA's in Brooklands green and I have to say this thing is georgeous, a proper MG. I'm not a fan of classic cars but this thing is very very nice

This is what pi$$e$ me off about being a scoob owner......
every fecking time someone mentions a car......the scoob HAS to be better....
This is why most of these drivers DO sit on your bumper and DO try to chase you up the duel carriageways and DO try to race you from the lights.. its because most fecking scoob owners think that the scoob is the best and fastest car out there..... Its a bloody pile of $hit and most of us know it...
Yeah they can handle well... yeah they are quick for the money you pay..... but look how much we are spending on top of the buying price just so we can have a car that is quick, that can handle better and that can stop without warping the cheap standard disc's they give you... all for what .... so that someone can then nick it and use it in a ramraid or something...
I have seen post from people slagging off ford/MG/Rover/BMW like Subaru are the kings of the road or something.
And if these MG/Rovers ... which I personally think look quite nice, are pi$$ing you off because they are sitting on your bumper, then why don't you just put your foot down and lose them....or are they to quick for the high almighty scoob to lose......???
I am so sick of hearing about how great the scoobs are and how everything else is crap.........
I enjoy driving my scoob and get the most out of her when I can but damn....its not the best thing on the road......

Some people really are blinkered by their own sense of self-satisfaction and ego.
Quite a few of the maw power brigade have started to modify the rover foxcat - the 220 coupe bodyshape for example.
The MG heritage is exactly that - fast saloons - they are proving it on the track in the BTCC and they are standing up for a British Marque.
Ok some drivers/owners may not drive the way you would like, I feel the same about others. But to generalise like this is hypocritical - just because the own a car which you have judged to be inferior

whoa... hit a nerve here.
i have a friend who is rover mad, he has nine examples dating back to the very first 75, made in like the forties or something. he's a great guy and we respect each other for the love of the car. fine and dandy.
all I was saying is that there are a lot of them around... my bumper that is. You don't see Omega drivers wacking sills on their cars and pretending to be Holden HSV owners - just because there's some slight connection somewhere along the line!?!?
it will be good to see MG grow, and let's hope they do a good job of it too. for now, they are just old rovers, well not even that - old Civics with a 10 YEAR OLD design...

Crap interiors in Rovers, maybe, Subaru wrote the book on that one though.
Besides, the Rovers are mainly less than a year old at the mo and therefore cost more than 5 grands worth of aged WRX, they look ok ish but but there are also some really nasty bad boy Scoobs out there.
Scoob owners will soon be almost as sumg as BMW Coupe owners/M and S shoppers, so watch it !

I certainly never said the a Scoob was better ?! In fact I do not own a Scoob Turbo. Just voicing my opinon on a car that I do not like. My Opinion.
What p1sses me off is people that flame others for voicing their opinions in a rational manner. What is a BBS for if not for voicing opinions and having discussions without other people taking it personally

"Spooky that, the power of a bit of plastic attached to the car!"
sorry if i have got on anybody's nerves with this one!!! i was taking the mess out of the car yes, i have to admit - but what the hell??? the message is that it's all in good faith - nobody is saying the scoob is all conquering - there's just a lot of passion here...
when you were in the schoolyard, you didn't say "well actually i think your dad COULD spark mine out" of course you didn't! It's the same here, for the guys on here nothing is better. Same for the EVO crowd, Skyline crowd etc.
in summary, all those who rose up in defence, please relax a little...
my post's summary, and perhaps the most interesting point was about the badge. You have to admire Rover (sorry MG) for their financial cunning. Never has a manufacturer gained so many sales by the addition of 10p bit of plastic on the front and rear. Cost effective or what!
as i said - amazing what a badge will do!
