Red face Today's Children in Poverty

I see that some charity or another is claiming that 25% of kids are living in poverty.

One of the markers which proves poverty for a child these days is this:-

"A Child who has to share a bedroom with another"

WTF!!??

Not only did I have to share a bedroom with my siblings - I also shared the bed!!! Times were really tough in those days!!

6 kids in a bed wasn't unusual, while my Dad was down pit and Mum was in the wash house!

Todays society is pathetic ....... stop the world and let me off!

Bed - bloody luxury in them days. We were lucky to sleep under one blanket on kitchen tiles. Some of us took it in turns to get a few moments of sleep in outside privy.....

You have no idea of what it was really like

The UK has a massive amount of child poverty... Most of it hidden where we dont see it, behind middle class front doors.

My 11 year old bring a friend round on a regular basis cause she isnt fed at home, parents are alcoholics and she isnt getting fed.

We will get to those statements from a list of people each saying that they were worse off than the one in front of him soon!

Children sharing a bed was common when I was a child though.

I think a bit of perspective is needed. It is AN indicator of poverty, not THE indicator, and as such I think it is a fair one.

I think that its a sad day indeed , that in this country , in 2013, we are even having posts like this. Yes, things were tough in the day , but arent things supposed to improve as time goes on?

From what I saw where I used to live income wasnt an issue it was how it was spent. The benefits system see that no one with children would be in poverty even if both parents couldnt bothered to work, but if the parents spend it all on drink they are as good as in poverty.

I bet there are more people in poverty that work than there are on the dole. I don't think its possible to be unemployed and in poverty anymore. I know a family of non-workers who are going on holiday this year, its costing them (us) 200quid a month to pay off. How can someone on the dole have a spare 200quid to pay off a holiday per month?

Likewise. There's married couple I know of who claim disability benefit, pretend to be separated so they get 2 different houses and a larger allowance. They are given a brand new car every 2 years - this time its a Citreon C Crosser with which they have put their own private plate on with 1 number and 3 letters. Every couple of months they go on holiday to their holiday home, a privately owned wooden chalet and have even paid for their friends to go on holiday as well.

They're not doing anything wrong, not legally anyway. They've got the system sussed and spend the appropriate amount of time at their respected homes but do everything else with each tother the rest of the time. Their financial wealth is due to the support they get, nothing else. It is the system that needs sorting out as its ripe for exploitation.

If they are separated yet go on holidays together and get cars/houses each then I'd say that is fraud, no?

I dont know details but its to do with how much time they spend in each house, plus there's the difficulty in proving anything. I forgot to mention that the man also gets an allowance wage to look after his wife, Im not sure whether thats something to do with them acting as though they are separated or not. Fair enough she is in a bad way and is not capable of working but why do they get so much that they can afford excessive luxuries? He on the other hand is capable of working...which I think is why his job is 'looking after' his lady, although I have learnt that he is going on holiday abroad (again) to go fishing and leaving her for a week, so not sure how he's going to be doing that. The whole think stinks.
