Default OK, so I've had a cold now for about 8 weeks..........

.........should I go to my GP?

It's in my throat all the time, loads of mucus, catarrh, etc, chokes me unless I slee on my stomach, constant headaches, and clearing my throat ALL the time.

Is it anything to worry about?

It feels like I'm STARTING a cold, but it never quite becomes the full-blown thing. But how can that go on for EIGHT weeks??

Got a gas boiler or open fire? Is the flue clear?

Or could just be an allergy maybe?

Either way, would seek advice from GP.

I feel like this pretty much the whole of Jan/Feb every year, although i suffer from Asthma which is the main cause of it. The cold damp air is the main reason. I'd be better off at -20 in a Scandanavian winter than the damp 5 degree's we have here.

Might see what the GP thinks.

As for AIDS, chance would be a fine thing.....

I had exactly the same thing from since before Christmas.

It lasted about 12 weeks.

Then I was ok for a week and caught full on flu.

Alcazar, there are some seriously nasty flu type bugs about this year. Go to the docs and get some anti biotics ... I didn't and got a full on chect infection that eventually migrated north and into the Eustachian tubes ... my right ear is still partially blocked some 8 weeks on! Not nice!

Usual rule of thumb is 21 days for lumps, bumps, coughs etc and immediate for occult blood in sputum, urine and stools.......

time to visit the docs as I am sure John Banks would say LOL

Are you in France?

My mum's partner has had a cough since last year...finally sent him to the docs halfway through last month.

Usual fob off: Antibiotics and come back after they've finished.

Took the whole course; no effect.
Saw GP again who put him on different antibiotics.
Week later no effect
Finally GP asked him to send in a mucus sample for testing...and told him to carry on with the antibiotics.
Week later called back in, test results are in and he has to take ANOTHER course of different antibiotics as it turns out that the infection he has got needs a different antibiotic for it to be treated.

Finally it seems they are doing the trick....but....

FFS, why didn't the GP have the mucus sample tested in the first place?

Bar two weeks I have been ill for the last 10 weeks with various ailments including opthalmic shingles that has left me with permanent scarring on my eye ball. I am now literally sick of it. One thing ends and another starts. I would imagine the cause was either overtraining at the gym, stress or lack of sleep.

My wife had a cough for about a month, after nagging from myself, she finally went to the docs, got some antibiotics (pills and some cough syrup). The syrup seemed to make her high, which amused both the doctor and I (I know, not really a laughing matter, but hey ). So she stuck to the pills, which seemed to work.
She was off the pills for a couple of days and the cough came back. Again she left it for a few weeks, and again after nagging, went to the docs. Got some syrup, tried it, made her feel very unwell, so she immediately stopped using it.

Somewhere around this timeframe she came down with the flu, proper flu too (funny, she'd had the flu shot and the strain most virulent this time round is in the shot, hmm) and so was not at all well.

I think she got something for that (could have been the syrup that made her feel unwell, can't recall, was over xmas period so manically busy and such)

After all this, still had a nasty cough, went to docs, was v concerned and doc wasn't impressed and immediately sent her for chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia, which, thankfully, she did not have.

Some more ab's and after this course, it seemed to kill the nasty bugger off.

Surely you are not frightened of your GP!

He gets paid enough,so why not go and ask him the question. He should know the best answer and maybe a way of getting rid of it.

It definately sounds like the late stages of HIV infection to me.

I got flu yesterday, started with dry throat/cough,by 4pm it felt like i was on fire, and had constant pain in the side of my head all night, thought i was gonna have to call an ambulance i was getting so bad by 10pm,hallucinating,cold shivers the lot.
Got someone to get me a bottle of calpol this morning, and its brought my temperature down and the head pains have almost gone, although i still feel quite rough.
Its been quite some time since i was sick, and i can't remember any cold/flu being as bad as this one.

Touch wood, I've never had flu.
Always declined a flu jab when I worked in a hospital. Never used to catch any of the bugs either.
Despite the daily abuse I give my body, my immune system is fantastic!

Its never a waste of the doctor's time, after 8 weeks you have a perfect right to get his advice. Especially if he can do something about it.
