Default Re-chipping a puppy

Some breeders chip their puppies before sale.

So if you get one what do you do about getting it re-chipped as it were with your own details?

I thought the chip itself held just a code, which is a key to an ownership database. It is the database that needs updating no?

You just get the owner details amended by the company holding the chip information don't you so when the chip is read and looked up your details come up. They aren't in the cjip as such as far as I know.

Edit: as mentioned above by RRGM.

David
That tickled me.

It's just like changing the registration documents of a car from the previous owner to a new owner.

When you get the pup you will get a form which allows you to register your name / address for the chip number. Fill it in and post it off. There may be a small admin charge.

When to you next go to the vets - which will be fairly soon after collection - make sure the chip number is the same as what you have on the card.
