WOW.

can't help it.

So glad I booked in advance to see it again tonight at 21:00

the thing is, this morningndespite being their first performance was not so packed that we couldn't get excellent seats.

Tonight its not going to be so easy.

It was one of those films where people clapped when the title screen from the board of classification came up.

Ahhh, that feeling reminds me of going up to Leicester Square to see the special editions of StarWars, Empire and Jedi.

People clapping when the credits came on, a shiver down the spine when the 'crawl' started. People booing when Vader appeared and cheering when Luke did!

awesome, it's what the cinema experience should be.

Would not want to see it in the USA, they take things to extremes over there!

I went to a 12:05 showing too. Blew me away! Uncle George gets it right at last!

The only spoiler was Yoda at the end, I don't think that the whole cinema was supposed to burst into laughter!

The action is superb, sloppy bits kept to a minimum, even most of the dialogue is passable (apart from references to "my little Padawan"! Is that a euphamism?)

Cannot wait to see it again.

Geezer

P.S. Natalie Portman, would you?

starting to look like leia a little.

Plus its nice to see all the later films start to tie together, ie owen and beru, and also boba fett's hatred.

All makes sense.

Yoda did create laughter, but there was awe too.

I had no idea how he was going to be good with a lightsabre being so small.

My doubts were quashed without giving too much away.

Wink

I can do this cracking impression of Yoda which I did at the start of The Phantom Menace, a little too loud and at entirely the wrong moment. The whole cinema heard it... doh! They laughed though.

Shame it doesn't transfer to the internet.

Maybe if I ever meet any of you...

load of CG generated tosh which is killing the art of story telling (something that George lost about the same time that Lando and Chewie left to search for Han)

In SA we've got to wait until 21 June 2002... I'd guess there will be a flood of pirate VCD's and DVD's before that though...

went last night - fx were good, but other than that it was crap. spent the last hour wanting to go get beer. I'm with tiggs. There was no story. It was completely contrived to make the first three make some sense and in doing so, 'lost the plot' entirely.

told you so... and i havent even seen it!!!!

talking of contrived hows this for a change in george's ability to tell a story:

phantom menance- R2D2 saves the ship and gets a royal thank you- hes a robot so thats all pants, its just there so that think muppets realise its the same robot from the old movies.

empire strikes back (watched it the other day)- as han is tell the princess he needs to go to see jaba he makes a comment about a bounty hunter they ran into. as far as i know we never see this so i assume it takes place between 4 and 5- george leaves it up to us to fill in the gaps and dosnt patronise us by explaing that hoth doesnt take place the day after the medal giving at the end of star wars!

Went to the late showing last night and apart from the nice look of the film it was pretty pants.
Well ms portman is stuuning (!).
The story is pretty weak, and the battles are nothing special.
The phantom menace still has the best battle. But the 3 original star wars are still miles ahead.
Disappointed.

Cheers

yes worse than the first one.

Just watch the animated Clerks cartoon where Jay has George Lucas in witness box demanding his 7$ back for the sh1te Phantom menace. He describes all the huge continuity(word?) errors in the story Lucas made from the last episode...cracking stuff

I really enjoyed it, but Goerge does make some continuity bloopers.

Why in EPIV does Owen Lars not realise that C3PO and R2D2 are the same bots fro EPIII, but even more incredibly, why doesn't C3PO realise that when the Jawas bring him and R2 to the Lars farm that it is the same place he went with Shmi? I can accept a possible lapse of memory for Owen, he is only human after all, but C3PO?

And wouldn't Darth Vader twig it was just a bit of a coincedence that the droids turned up at his step brothers farm?

talking of continuity- this would be good! reshoot empire S B so that when C3po get blown to bits vader sees him and says "oh my god! youre the bot i built" and starts to reapir him!

ps- Mark Kermode is on 5Live today doing a review of it (HE HATES IT! )

dont understand how you can say it was disappointing, I am wondering what exactly you are expecting.

As a die hard star wars fan, I think he hit the nail on the head.

ok continuity was poor, how comes r2d2 cant fly anymore?

but if you look at the later films 4 5 and 6, he is always the hero and saves the day on so many occasions.

it had everything necessary to bring it into line.

Yes there are things that dont make sense.

It is set 10 years after the first, making annakin 15 and in married!

or is it that he just says he hasnt seen her in 10 years and we dont know how long after the first fil they parted company.

I dont understand why people are complaining that they fit together, they are supposed to, and there will be a gap.

look at it this way, we know why boba fett is so anti jedi now.

and we know why yoday is the jedi master.

dont get how annakin will one day be the most powerful jedi, cant see that at all. he never amounted to more than I saw from yoda.

anakin is 9 in episode 1 and amidala was 16 and in episode 2 he is 19 and she is 26 she dont look 26

The reason anakin becomes so powerful is because he was conceived by the force he is actually far stronger than Yoda but has trouble keeping his power under control, also all the cybernetic implants he gets as obi wan keeps beating him up

A few people are commenting that the new film (AOTC) is 'contrived', to make the 'first 3' (i.e., SW, ESB and RoTJ) make sense.

Not so. I think people need to realise that Lucas wrote the entire SW story way before SW Ep IV was filmed, but realised it was too long a story to make one movie. So he split it into 3.

Then he realised that those 3 parts were still too big, so he split them into 3 parts each. He then went about making the movies, starting with the middle three.

So there are nine parts in all. Lucas has claimed that he won't be around to see the final 3 parts get made (i.e., the follow-up to RoTJ and the contination of the story, where allegedly Han is supposed to get together with Leia and have a child, and Luke turns to the dark side to destroy it from within). But I'm getting carried away now, and there are numerous 'Star Wars Timeline' sites on the web which speculate on what will/won't happen (according to Lucas) in the unmade portions of the story.

Anyway, the point is that the stories aren't 'contrived', even if they seem so - the entire story, all 9 parts, was written as one.

And no, I've not seen AoTC, and yes I will be going to see it in a couple of weeks, after the hysteria has died down. I hate going to see a movie when the fans shout and cheer all the way through it...
