Default Your first record or CD?

Good article on the BBC in light of the near demise of HMV, and therefore all high street record shop chains, thinking back on the place of purchase of your first record or CD.

HMV, Our Price, Virgin: The place where you bought your first CD

What was the first CD or record (or 8 track ) you bought and where did you buy it from?

My first album (LP - vinyl) was Rattus Norvegicus by The Stranglers and my first single (7" vinyl) was Picture This by Blondie both bought from Woolworths in Gravesend. The first single I owned was Bohemian Rhaposdy a year or two earlier, but my Mum bought me that so it doesn't count

'Sister Jane' by New World (it's, er, cr4p) was my first 45 in around 1972, and I suspect a Beatles record in the 1970s as my first LP, but I can't remember which one now.

Always a battle between J S Bach and Heinrich Schutz these days though. How my tastes have changed!

My old man gave me Pink Floyds 'The Wall' on cassette. Hated it at the time, and used to sit there studying the parents vinyl, a lot of Beatles and Stones. My favourite was the 'Magical Mystery Tour' EP with the book.

*love Floyd now, and have done since just a few years after he gave me the tape!

I don't remember what the first anything I bought was.

My first cd was a Xmas present and it was Now 23 or 27.
I remember having Pet Shop Boys on cassette before that though I think.

A tape of Elvis no. 1s to go with my first portable cassette player. It wasn't a Walkman, Walkmans had a rewind button. Bought with my mother at Estover Asda in Plymouth for 99p which was five weeks pocket money at 20p a week. I was seven I think and the first track was Heartbreak Hotel. I can remember being in the music section and selecting it and Mum being surprised at my choice. An hour later I was jumping around my bedroom to All Shook Up. Magic!

I know the place, right beside the Windmill! Funny how the ability to rewind was seen as a 'nice-to-have' isn't it?!!

Tel, The Vapors (minus the 'u' - sorry, I just had to point that out) got to number 3 with Turning Japanese... a song about masturbation so the story goes. Great track

At the time it was great, subsequent over exposure has made it the laughing stock many see it as today, but you're right ... it's basically a good pop song!
