Instead of calling the police for an escort, call an ambulance and get some decent first aid. They have flashing lights and noisy things too.

No **** Sherlock!

It was an "i.e." Steve, i sooooo knew when I posted this I would get bull**** responses.....

I have a very different reason for possibly needing an escort, - did you think about that - oh noooo, you just merrily hit reply didn't you?

Either answer the question or don't, I don't want a debate on the pros and cons of the issue (which was only an example anyway) thank you.

Crispin,

Could you elaborate somewhat?

My response to taking injured in own car would be to call an ambulance, that is far better than dealing with it yourself.

Even in rural areas, the response times of ambulances are extraordinary.........take Staffordshire for instance....very rural county but the best response times in the country (my mum worked for them )

Cheers,

Michelle.

Do you need armed police or the normal police?

as a rule the police will want to transport you in an emergency vehicle

1. - better maintained, from a trust point of view
2. - better driven (usually)
3. - Insurance/public liability - if you crash the car whilst under escort in to a bus queue - you can imagine the headlines.

They may follow you to or from a location - but never escort.

Michelle,

Thanks for your response, the example was merely that, that's not why I would require an escort. I didn't want to elaborate too much really, but I may need to get to someone who is ill in the next few months, I work in London, and live (albeit part time) in Cornwall. When "that phonecall" comes I won't have much time I doubt (this has happened once before), so I should prefer to be either taken or escorted to Cornwall, rather than "go it alone" like I did last time, because as is blindingly obvious, this is not safe....

Crispin,

Talk to your local ambulance service and doctor.

They can arrange some sort of transport. The ambulance service will provide an ambulance (either A&E for urgent cases or PTS if emergency support is not required) for taking the person across.
I am sure their GP can arrange some sort of transport.

I urge you to do this as it will be better for you.

Failing that, contact your local police station and ask there.

Cheers,

Michelle.

Okay, I have just re-read your post, sorry.

I am not too sure whether this can be accomodated, but I am sure if you do speak with the police then they can give you some sort of advice.

Actually, I have to say I am not too sure after all, I am placing what little faith I have on the police to hopefully assist you this one time. Let us hope they do try.

Crispin - I think I get the idea. At some point in the near future you will need to get from where you are to where someone else is in a hurry? I had a similar circumstance while working in a comms room 80 miles from home. Wifey decided to give birth, but couldn't get me on the mobile. She knew were I was so she called the local police to get them to tell me. They came and told me (I thought it was a wind up at first,) then bunged my into the back of the police car (I had my own car there, but they reckoned it would be better to get me home in a hurry) They then proceeded to drive me home at well in excess of 100MPH on blues and twos. (They thought it would be funny not to turn them off when we got to the house )

can't offer adivce.

But to clarify what you are asking.

You, who is a healthy individual, ie; not requiring medical attention, wishes to get from point A to point B as quickly and uninterrupted as possible, thus a police escort "clearing the way" for you to do this is what you are after.

not being pushy here, just trying to make it clear to others that this is what you are after and that you, yourself are not injured, but you need to get to someone who could be seriously ill (obviously we won't go into details here) as quickly as possible.

fb,

CORRECT.

If they'll provide that service for me all the way to Cornwall then i'll do that for sure for obvious reasons, but if not..... then i'll make my own way there, as progressively and safely as possible.

right AFAIK, if you just want to beat the traffic and avoid being caught 'speeding' then they won't help.

As you know you may need to 'speed' in the near future I'd imagine they'd tell you to make alternative arrangements to either be closer to where you need to be or bring the problem to you.

The police are an emergency service. Can you imagine how many fat cats would use the police as a taxi express if they could.

You can hire police for events but not for an escort. Unless you are a diplomat or something - but then you'd have your own little army anyway.

"right AFAIK, if you just want to beat the traffic and avoid being caught 'speeding' then they won't help."

Thats not the case, and if you had read the posts above you would know that.

"As you know you may need to 'speed' in the near future I'd imagine they'd tell you to make alternative arrangements to either be closer to where you need to be or bring the problem to you."

Not really possible, lets not speculate on what you 'imagine' they'd say shall we.

The police are an emergency service. Can you imagine how many fat cats would use the police as a taxi express if they could.

Don't you think I know that?? Again, if you read the posts above then you will see the potential seriousness of my situation - talk about irrelevant and speculative.

It was a serious question that demanded a serious answer, not idle opinions if you're bored.......

I don't need or want any more replies to this thanks people.

You ok Crispin mate ??

I've spoken to my neice she's in the West Middlands police thingy. She says that you have 2 options

1) Request a police escort at least 3 months in advance and you will have to pay for it.

Obviously out of the question

2) At the time you need the escort dial 999 and request one.

Option 2 depends on the seriousness of the situation, the work load at the current time and the person on duty.

Oh and you may still have to pay for it

Hope this helps

Mike

If it's so serious why not just ask the police?

Seems to me if you ask a question on a public BBS you will get peoples opinions. But you knew that..

I have been in touch with the traffic police, and got what I wanted.

Just the facts Sir, Just the facts.....

Just because a question is on a bbs, doesn't mean we should all have a stab at it, did you have a pop at the MFC question in Computer Related...no....why?...because you didn't know the answer...neither did I...so guess what.....I didn't answer it.

Not quite what your talking about but imagine this one:

Your son/daughter becomes ill. You can either take them to the local "minor injuries unit" or call a GP to visit you at home. Now in my case, even without breaking the law etc. it would be quicker to take the ill person to the local "minor injuries unit" in the car. Once there, a doctor takes a look at your son/daughter and says something along the lines of, "I suspect they have meningitis, they need to get to hospital (which happens to be 20 miles away)ASAP, I'll call you an ambulance."

Now the nearest ambulance is about ten minutes away, its Sunday evening, and I know for a fact that in ten minutes I can be halfway to the hospital (which are now expecting you btw)... so what would you do at this point?

No hesitation, I'd strap my child in the car, and be doing well over a ton down the local motorway within about 2 minutes of leaving the minor injuries unit in attempt to save their life. (every second counts so to speak with meningitis). I'd ask the Doctor/Nurse at hospital to call the police and tell them Im doing it, and hope they do the right thing and clear the way. Its not like Ambulances are even fast is it, its just that they can cut through traffic easier with the blues and two's on. So where I live, and in the majority of traffic conditions, its quicker to do it yourself.

Of course if somebody is having a heart attack, thats a different matter, because the ambulance ppl can do something about that and they will get to you before you can get them to a hospital. There are however some cases, like the above, where its better to do it yourself. You still need to way up the pro's and con's of a) if you crash or b) the police catch up with you..... but I know I'd risk it in the case above.

Out of interest, has anyone ever been pulled by the police for speeding, while their Mrs is starting to give birth in the car? Be interested to read what they did? Did they take u to the hospital and then nick you, or take you, and wave as they drove off, wish you the best of luck?

An ex of mine had that excuse when I had quite a severe attack, he just went through red lights (safely I might add, although it sounds odd), sped and eventually got pulled, the police took one look at me and let him continue, with them in fornt.

Yes you can mate, but how easy it is to sort depends on the officer you get. Be polite and explain your reasons clearly and the Old Bill will usually help.

Have three tails relating to this, first was myself who when attacked by a VERY large dog when younger, my father was too impatient waiting for an ambulance, and bundled me into the car with several blood soaked towels round my head was stopped on the way to hospital.
The police didnt particularly want me bleeding all over there car, so escorted my father to casualty.

Secondly a friend was stopped in epsom late at night with heavily pregnant wife in car was stopped then escorted to epsom hospital.

Thirdly when we asked the hospital about what we should do when my six month old son kept waking at night choking and not breathing, we were told to phone the hospital who would assist over the phone if it was after 8pm!!?? I have no qualms about bundling him in the car and setting off to casualty whilst my wife talks to them on phone, sod telephone support!

Im not being funny or anything but have you considered fitting those strop effect lights into your grill. If i was in the same position thats the first thing i would do. I bet it would work a treat to. People would think youre a copper and get out of the way.
If you got pulled you could say you had them installed for show, and that you needed to use them for the current emergencey.

Best of luck mate,
Scrappy
