Learning to play the guitar
bought myself an entry level countryman guitar today and a beginners book.
I've never played an instrument at all, can anyone recommend a good youtube channel or a tuner i could put on the iphone.
any advice for a newbie would be much appreciated

I play the organ and always wanted to play the guitar. I have a Polish friend who gave me a few lessons and unbelievably playing the guitar really hurts my fingers. Bit gutted tbh

Look on you tube for a guy called Marty Schwartz
He does loads of stuff , from beginners to more advanced
And like before learn three or four chords and you'll soon be playing plenty of songs
The quicker you can knock out a Recognisable tune the less Likley you will get disheartend and bored
Good luck mate & stick at it

Make sure you give it at least six weeks, practising at least every day or so (preferably every day). It takes that long for the small muscles in your fingers to build up strength, so it can feel like you are getting nowhere initially, but stick with it.
I would recommend getting some lessons as it is easy to pick up bad habits when starting out, which you will have to unlearn later on.
I'd also recommend getting a copy of Guitar Pro (http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php) and downloading tabs for your favourite songs from ultimate guitar (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/). Everlong is a good initial target - great song, not too hard to learn, but you will have to tune the guitar to drop-D.

Very best if luck. Do stick it out for a couple of months and you may well surprise yourself - and your fingers will toughen up
If you haven't got a decent music shop near you then have a look through www.stringsdirect.co.uk Just great to browse through and for basic stuff like tuners and strings.
A lesson would be well worth it and teachers will be used to complete beginners.
David
PS. I am told there is a guitar tuning phone app.

Got an iPad? GarageBand on that with a USB enabled guitar is very good to play on without pissing the neighbours or family off. I.e. an electric guitar and headphones hooked up to iPad so you can also do all the pedal effects etc.

I play a little (guitar) and have started to teach my 6yr old Son. I've found that learning the famous "everyone knows" easy tab like...
Smoke on the Water
Seven Nation Army
Sunshine of your Love
has really kept his interest up. Its taught him fret's and fret numbers, movement between notes and the timing of hitting the note at the point his finger presses the fret. And of course its started to toughen up the ends of his fingers.

also check out justinguitar !!
good luck and keep practising....then practise some more...
get a guitar stand and make sure your guitar is on show... it will encourage you to pick it up whenever you walk past it !! (as opposed to locking it away in a cupboard)
Enjoy !!

My advice is to start with green day Similar but far easier (a lot of their material is in standard tuning, rather than drop-d.) Foo Fighters stuff often has complicated rhythms which you don't notice until you start to try learning it.
