Going to Scotland . Recommendations to kill time
Hi Folks,
Myself,my wife and our two kids (5 & 3 years of age)along with the Outlaws are going to St Andrews for a wedding.
I wanted to drive up from S/W London but the wife suggested we get a flight.
So, we are catching an early morning flight to Edinburgh Airport but means we have around six /seven hours to kill before we can check in at our hotel.
We also have around 4 hours to kill before having to check in at the Airport for our return flight.
My Wife wants to take the kids to Edinburgh Castle and so she can do some shopping, but personally I'd like to travel the Lanark or even go to Colin McRaes final resting place whilst I am up there.
Any recommendations?
Cheers
Steve

You'll struggle to do much in the time it will take you to get from the airport to the hotel etc.
Airport bus to the city centre and then wander about a bit would be my advice. Gettign to Lanark will need a car and be a mad scramble.
What time are you actually there and when? You might be able to pick up a show at the fringe. There are specific kids shows so would be a treat for them as apart from the beach St Andrews doesn't have a lot for the wee ones.

Get the express bus from the airport into Edinburgh, takes 20-30mins and costs £3.50 for adults (cheaper for kids).
This will take you to Waverley Station, dump your luggage and take one of the Edinburgh city tour buses.

Jump on & off as you please to explore the Royal Mile, Castle, etc.
Lots of festival events on at the moment, you could try and get tickets for a show although there will be lots of free things going on in the Royal Mile. Expect it to be busy!
Collect luggage and take train from Waverley Station to St Andrews.

Steve,
Another vote for Edinburgh Zoo - fantastic for the kids and not far from the airport.
When Coz was about to start school we asked what she wanted to do for a day out - the Zoo was her choice - Edinburgh was ours.
We flew from Luton, went to the Zoo (by bus) then into the city for tea before returning to the airport to fly home - and it was cheaper than a day at London Zoo less than an hour away.
Oh and Ark wants to see at least one pic of you in the mask north of the border.......

Blair Drummond safari park is also good. Then drive the Fife coastal route through all the fishing villages in the east nuke of Fife stopping off at the Anstruther fish bar for dinner.
In St Andrews you can:
Visit the castle, square tower, harbour, beaches (take a kite. The west sands is one of the best beaches for flying kites in the world)
Play crazy golf at the Himalayas.
Go to jannettas for ice cream
The tail end in St Andrews is also a good chippy and is owned by the people who one owned the Anstruther fish bar.

St Andrews, Fife Coastal route and Edinburgh would be the highlights of that trip. Forget Lanark and Spean Bridge with time available
There is an ex nuclear bunker that may be of interest depending on the kids.

Take a drive out to loch Lomond. Stunning views 1/2 hours drive from Glasgow airport. Edinburgh castle is a must visit.
