intermittent fasting - anyone tried?
Myself & my brother are embarking on a trial of intermittent fasting.
Has anyone else tried this method for weight loss?
Seems to be getting quite a lot of good press in the last month, and apparently has other health benefits.
Thoughts?
(I'm 15st 6 at the mo, aiming to lose 2st +/-)

my mate runs it, he's a strength and conditioning coach, its free, but he asks you to donate what you can afford to cancer research when the 3 week course is over. I lost a stone and I didnt have a stone to lose. Have my 6 pack back and I am 39 this year

Combined with a sensible exercise programme it can be ok but on its own your body apparently goes into emergency mode, preserves the fat and eats the muscle. You lose weight but it's not healthy and not a pretty sight! The usual combination of good diet and exercise works best.

Yes I did see the Horizon program - that;s what brought this on.
My diet is actually OK - probably just portion control.
No Choc, crisps not much booze.
Exercise is the main issue. Suffer from the CBA attitude. That and my knees are buggered (hopefully the initial weight loss will sort them out).
I do spend an hour or so running around after my son, so that probably counts some

Just weigh your food and liquid, work out its calories content and stick to 1400ish calorie diet (its very easy to go over this if you don't look at the food/drink packaging properly). And eat to three meals a day - decent breakfast, snack for lunch, and a light evening meal.
It'll drop off.
But once your on that type of diet, you can't go back to the same portion sizes of what you once ate (you'll jjust put the weight back on). The only other way round it is excercise more - and keep doing it.

My wife does something like this. Not really for weight loss, but for health:
She eats nothing for a few days, then juices and strange herbal teas and a few things like liquidized lemons a garlic. This is *supposed* to cleanse the body and this regime lasts about a month.

I dont do it as a specific regime but occasionally go 24-36 hours without eating.
Never really works for me, I can lose the 'belly' during the period that i don't eat, but as soon as I have a meal my paunch instantly reappears!

After that it's pretty obvious to most you've to ease up on the chips and ice cream and of course alcohol
It's not rocket science.
Together with 20 minutes walking a day, not just up and down the stairs to go to work and back

You can weigh up the cals in a meal you've made ( and should ) .this will get your eye in

There's a reason there are so many fatties about it. It's not want of scales or weight loss theory!

if you look at overweight people, say walking down the street or sitting in a car, it is not long before they put something in their mouth
i am sure they do not really notice it themselves

No but the inclination and desire to do something about it does. For some people modern society makes it nigh on impossible to achieve and maintain weight loss. Unless we are only given enough to survive on we invariably over eat-human nature unfortunately.
Food is a very potent drug. Deprive yourself of your favourite food for a week or two and see how good it tastes when you do eat it. Not only do you enjoy the taste of said food but your body releases dopamine which adds to the 'high'.

Yup, large Mc-Donalds Big Mac meal with a tub of ketchup is 1200 calories just on its own!
200 cals in a pint of larger
50 cals per biscuit
25 calories in one teaspoon of sugar (take note coffee/tea drinkers)
So one large maccy D's, two cups of tea with two sugars (plus the milk - thats another 15 calories) and two biscuits and I'm over my daily intake limit.

Intermittent fasting is really for bodybuilders when getting ripped for a competion. Carb cycling is more effective & easier. Read the four hour body by Tim Ferris, I lost 4 stone on this whilst eating large meals & doing moderate exercise.

Did you keep the weight off?

Started at 14stone, ended up at 10stone ripped with a 6pack. My wife said I looked too skinny so I added more carbs & put on just over a stone & Iv stayed the same weight for about 10 months. I have to say it was fairly easy, the hardest thing was fitting in 2 hours of exercise a week.

I have fasted for 30 days, I do intermittent fasting as part of my diet regime for training. I am a very actively and healthy (I hope) individual.
Intermittent fast is a great way of controlling your intake, all I will say is don't eat crappy food and you will be fine.
I like to do partial fasts for a few days, simply cutting out one or two meals.
Medically it has been proven to detox the body, why would medical institutes recommend fasting now (a practice from the east that has been going on for a long long time).
Truth of the matter is some folks are lazy, knowingly or unknowingly and that's fine, just don't get all judgemental on other people straight off the bat.

And do you have any facts to back this claim up?
No?

i find when on a diet you soon dont feel as hungry as normal. I assumed it is due to your stomach shrinking ? I definitely feel hungry the day after a big meal , so try to avoid big meals as a treat . Like i would diet all week and feel ok , then have a big chinese meal as a weekly treat. But the next day when i get up i feel starving and its hard not to pig out. I would imagine fasting will have the same effect ?

1) Please provide a link to this medical evidence
2) Which medical institutes are recommending fasting?
Thanks
