A commoner got too close to what appears to be a fat corporate bigwig and has to be punished.

If social unrest is such a problem then perhaps all the money and energy ploughed into the Olympics should have been spent on something more important than letting the corporate elite find other ways to demonstrate their superiority over everyone else.

That's absolutely ridiculous IF it was just as it appeared. As you say, fat, rich publicity ****** getting preferential treatment. There's nothing worse. It's actually bordering on embarrassing the way this is being done and hyped. Look at the uniforms of the 'staff', the kit the torch bearer wears and the massive OTT convoy vehicles.

If it was about stopping attacks on the torchbearer then the no-go zone would be extended. It's just to keep the commoners in their place and stop them breaking the rules.
Needed more common sense and less Sheriff John Bunnell.

The 'Torch Security Team' seem to be doing a fantastic job of reinforcing the public's perception of the Met as a government financed gang of thugs and bullies

"commoner" vs "big-wig"!!??!!!???!!??
seriously fella you have a MASSIVE chip on your shoulder
as for man-handling the kid on the bike, good effort, he shouldnt have started heading further towards the torch bearer - especially as there are SERIOUS concerns about terrorism affecting the Olympics
Had he got nearer and then detonated you would all be saying "how did they let someone get so close, they can't manage terrorism in the UK blah, blah, blah"

You're part of a security team designed to keep the torch bearer safe. You have strict instructions and are trained to prevent anyone, yes, anyone from entering the "security bubble". You glance over your shoulder and see someone frantically pedalling alongside the coach. The bicyclist then changes angle slightly and heads into the bubble. Do you have time to judge how old the cyclist is. Do you have time to assess the threat and make a decision based on anything? No, you don't. So you do what you've been trained to do and that's prevent the intruder getting any nearer. Could you stop in that instant and say to the kid "Now, now, sonny, you're getting a bit close. Would you mind backing off a bit?" I doubt it given the situation!
If you can't see it any other way than that then you're hugely blinkered to the problems of terrorism, crowd control and the fear that terrorists will potentially use something as public as the Olympics to try to make a statement and gain publicity.
You do realise that the whole country is currently at the security level of "SUBSTANTIAL" - meaning that there is a substantial chance of a terrorist attack?

Because you're not a potential terrorist target!
Seriously mate are you having a laugh? Do you understand how terrorism works?
"Hey Ahmed?"
"What?"
"Shall we blow up the Olympic torch bearer or Tony de Wonderful??"
"Hmmm, good question, Ahmed, but I think we should target Tony to get maximum publicity as more people are likely to be watching him, dumbass!"

because he's reacting to situation - the kid is also travelling in that direction and the security guard is running in that direction too so there's an element of inertia
the guards first priority is to try to neutralise any threat - not carefully place someone on the floor in case they harm them or remove them from the bubble in a particular direction

Would of been more cleaner/quicker to of pushed the lad back to the side he approached from, rather than doing a Jonny Wilkinson, and then swinging the lad across the width of the road, and falling over in front of a vehicle in the process..
This was a much better way.
