Expensive morning........
Youngest comes downstairs to tell me that first off, the elctyric showr in his toom isn't working, and secondly, his girlfriend went into the bathroom to wash her hair and now the main power-shower isn't working either.
Investigating the power-shower rveals the water inlet valve to the cold tank stuck shut, the cold tank empty and the supply having exhausted itself.
So far so good, I free off the inlet valve ( and decide to de-limescale it later).
The shower now works, but needed a new showerhead and flexible pipe, as both were knackered: I tend not to use that shower and no-one told me.
So.......onto the lad's shower. There would appear to be no power getting to it, so I suspect the switch and unscrew it for a check. I get the mains tester screwdriver and probe the live OUTLET: nothing.
I go to probe the live INLET, there is an almighty flash and a bang and the mains goes off. And lo and behold, my mains screwdriver now no longer has a tip
So I have to go out and buy a new one and a new switch.
Looking at the old switch, the problem was that the switch's earth terminal (to earth the two screws) was within 5mm of the live incomer, and probing for live there made contact with both
Of all the places it could have been put.........
Anyway, switch + screwdriver + shower head + shower flexi pipe + £50 near enough.
At least I didn't have to pay someone to do the work
Now........... how do I get my youngest to take the water inlet valve to the cold tank apart and clean it?

People have died using these things to test for voltages, it uses your body as an earth, with the only thing stopping you from geting an electric shock, is a small cheap resister that can easily fail. It's why the HSE outlawed them in a place of work and it is why they are going to be banned as being sold as mains testers.
Get a set of these from Toolstation or even better, this set

Did the washer standpipe last night, moving the washer about was fun.......
The standpipe was completely blocked, but thankfully, I always make my own from 90 degree bends, so was able to demount it and clean it out.
I've been using mainstester screwdrivers since I was 13 and am not about to stop now. If the resisitor fails it will open circuit and NO current will flow.
Trust me: it works.
