Default Tracking down Life insurance policies

Is there anyway to do this if you don't know the details of the company they were taken out with.

A friend of the family emigrated to Canada 30 years or so ago, her mother still living in this country developed altimeters in the 90s. Her carer robbed her blind, cleared her bank accounts and sold most of her possessions.

Her daughter came back to England found out what had happened and took her back to Canada with her around 10 years ago.

Unfortunately she recently died.

Her daughter knows that various policies exist but doesn't have any details about them. The person who robbed her mother has any documents etc that were in the house.

Did the carer have Power of Attorney?

Is the daughter an executor of the estate?

If the daughter didn't have POA or is not an executor it will be hard to get any information at all.

I would think the daughter had POA since she took her mother back to Canada with her. The carer may have held it previously.

The daughter is acting as executor of the estate, she should be the sole beneficiary also.

Perhaps if mum has/had a UK bank account then premiums might still have been paid - the daughter might be able to get copies of the bank statements for the last 12 months (some might be paid annually) and look through the statements for any insurances being paid.

She could use the reference number of the premium together with the mothers personal details, previous addresses for UK and canada and finally the death certificate.

Any policies that weren't being paid but still active might be harder to track down. If premiums haven't been paid for a high number of years then any money that was due to the policyholder will have been dwindled by policy charges etc.

At a push write to the usual suspects (Standard Life, Prudential, Friends Life, Royal Sun Alliance, and perhaps some of the more obscure ones) asking how to go about tracking a policy down with just personal details.

If she can find out the company the rest is easy.
