Rest assured it will come.

Sure that changed from the original post.

Still, if it doesn't go on fuel it'll get stuck on something else.

I like how labour are trying to claim victory on this when it was them that took us from some of the cheapest fuel in Europe to one of the priciest.

What ever happened to the Conservatives pre-election when they were looking at a system to control the price of fuel?

Something along the lines of if the price goes up the duty comes down to keep the price constant?

Never mind I'm sure we will get 6p a litre in January

but it was the Tories who introduced the concept of the Fuel Price Escalator in 1993 - i.e. automatically increasing fuel duty above inflation - first 3% the 5%

Labour did carry the practice on though, but i doubt if things would be any different

Got to find money for the bottomless pit from somewhere. Someone somewhere will be benefiting from rises above inflation. Oh, and not to mention the civil servants that the money has to pass through before it goes anywhere.

The get out here is that we don't have a conservative govt. We have a coalition govt and while the Tories might claim that they'd love to introduce a fuel stabiliser (total bollocks by the way) the lib dems want us all cycling everywhere so it will never happen.

...well it (retail fuel price) has recently dropped by around 10p per litre - so where is the problem (with the now cancelled 3ppl duty rise)?

I think it's clear I don't think they are.

Why can't you read properly or do you just like to try and insult people for no reason?

What f1 is saying is that no longer is, ahem, 'New' Labour on the mid-left of the political spectrum.

They're more aligned on the right hand side!...Probably, even somewhere between the Tories and Lib Dem!!! (Or, if not to the right, then at least much further to centre.)

Hell, even Lib Dem are prob the right of centre these days!

Basically, in the grand scheme of things, they're all but like the Tories themselves!

Atleast the Tories don`t deny that fact and use smoke and mirrors and the word Elitist in every sentence like Andy (Full of crap) Burnham.

The only way a socialist society will work in its true sense is if money doesn`t exist, and we have invented an unlimited cheap and easy fuel.

Sort of like Star Trek, but until then you will always have have's and have nots, that is life. Trying to level the playing field cannot work, but offering a safety net for the have nots is a social responsibility. It is for them to want to improve themselves and to get more money, better possessions etc. It is NOT ours. I'll happily pay in to a system that supports people when they need it, as I may need it one day. But I refuse to pay for those who feel the world owes them, when they have no reason to need the support other than their own attitudes. If you need it then you should get it, but if not it should be refused.

If they want to reduce inflation and to help out people, lower the Tax on fuel. As this will bring down costs of commodities, have people with more money in their pockets to spend, less likely to miss a mortgage payment, the banks would get confidence from people spending and more likely to lend to businesses actually trading.

This is the bit I really can’t get my head around with any of the political parties, the inability to see the obvious, as fuel is a basic functionality / necessity. We all need fuel for the country to function, to get to work, to get food, to get food delivered, heat etc etc.
If want to create a stable economy then the price if fuel needs to be stable and not keep adding pence on per litre here and there.
I still feel the best way to kick start / rebuild the economy will be to freeze the cost of fuel at its current rate for a fixed term say 5 years. Its knock on effect will (should) do wonders.

It's the parties' indifference - the almost "meh"-like attitude - to fuel prices that angers me!

They just don't seem to be bothered about it (prob. because, at a personal level, it simply doesn't affect them.)

But it's a real issue for many - and obviously the economy - as cited by the above comments.

Why oh why can't the parties understand that the UK is chiefly a road haulage-based economy?! And as such, sky high fuel prices negatively affects everybody, from the road haulage industry through to the end consumer, through passed-on cost increases. It's such a simple nettle to grasp!

I hate ALL the parties over this issue!!!

Hang on, Mary. How do you know how he meant 'socialist' in that quote? You don't, so stop your whining. **** me, you've got a serious chip on your shoulder. And you're the one whining (again) about people being driven away from the forum.

Cant think why we can't just be grateful that the 3p is not going on for the moment. I wonder how much whingeing we would have seen if they put it on fuel now!

Might as well be grateful for the let off just for now, and we can all start jumping up and down if they should apply it after all at a later date!

Be happy, use it as a reason not to have to moan just for once!

Yeah obviously we're 'grateful' it never went on, etc...

But the underlying issue is the cost of fuel... as it stands! Or rather the % of duty (and VAT) that the govt. deems a 'necessity' to take from us.

Apparently we're the 2nd highest taxed in the world when it come to fuel (only Norway 'betters' us). Why should that be? (Esp., as we know, our infrastucture is based around road haulage). It's not as if we're a poor county by world standards.

It's the perfect combo of a generally apathetic public + millions of vehicles being a convenient, ready-made 'tax collector' = ever 'greedy' govts. It's kind of inevitable really.
