Default Using a 3-phase machine on 230V supply?

I'm looking at maybe buying a lathe and it's 3-phase.

I know it IS possible to run it on single phase mains, but how?

And what do you lose?

Probably easier to change motor to equivalent single phase one.........

I've been looking at spindles for CNC routers. They use a VFD which does the conversion and speed control. Not sure if relevant to a lathe motor.

Hm, new motors? There are two, as it's a milling machine too.

No wonder it's relatively cheap.

Im going to buy a convertor for a 3 phase welder and lathe, the convertor is expensive but the equipment is cheaper as most people just assume its just for factories.

Mines is just a hobby in the garage.

single to 3 phase inverter should be cheaper. try RS components.

Whats the difference between and invertor and a simple plug in convertor? I want to be able to unplug a lathe and then plug in a milling machine or welder?

When my grandparents moved into a grannyflat, my grandfather had a three phase connection installed in the garage, is this not feasible?

It wasnt cheap, but most of the cost was the cable and associated labour as the road was about 100m away. If your garage is closer it may make sense, particularly if you buy all of the starters and such used.

just buy a phase convertor and be done with it , if you replace the 3phase motors with single you will have to upgrade (ie replace 1.5kw 3phase with a 2.2kw single phase) as the start up torque loads are much lower on single phase and the frame sizes may not be the same

I used to have a Smart and Brown which was a very good lathe. It came as 3 phase but I fitted a single phase motor easily enough and never had a moment's trouble with it.
