Claiming back laundry tax allowance ??
Anyone here claimed for works uniform laundry expenses ?? made redundant last May after working for the same company for thirteen years . the works uniform - trousers / sweater / polo shirts etc ( company logo) were all expected to be washed by ourselves.
have since heard that it is possible to claim back a max off £45 per year for a max off six years ?? anyone confirm ??
had a quick look on the HMRC website but to be honest all a bit confusing, just want to print out a form, fill it in and fingers crossed ??!!
anyone able to advise ??

I done mine a while ago, you can claim up to 6 years back, and I believe it is up to £100 a year now. My tax code was altered to make up for it, but I think you can insist on a cheque. I phoned my local tax office and a lady sorted it on the phone there and then. The whole process was much easier than I was expecting.

the old work uniform allowance I have had it since the 90's on my tax code lol.
Not sure how much it is these days but every little helps.
maybe just give the HMRC a call it'll be easier.

You can write directly to the tax office to request it.
There is a very cheap book on Amazon, which tells you all of the different allowances you can claim. I'll post a link when I get more time.

I gave up with the HMRC and got a company to do it for me in the end (U-Tax). I think you can only claim for the last 4 years now. Still not bad though. I got a cheque back for a few hundred quid so it's definitely worth doing it. I gave them my details over the phone (I didn't have to hold for hours like I tried with HMRC!) they filled out the form for me and I just had to sign it.

By the looks of it, it is the tax relief you can claim back NOT the full allowance
So you only claim back 20% of the 60 quid a year for the last 4 years
So it isn't 60 quid a year you are claiming back

I think up till maybe last year you could claim back up to 6 years mate plus as I say depending on what job you had you could claim back for more ie for specailised cleaning etc, can also claim for buying your own tools etc,etc etc !!
as usual its there for claiming but not widely advertised !! and have fired off a letter to HMRC with all my details so will see what happens ??!!

Yeah it is just slightly misleading as its only the tax relief you can claim back not the full amount, if in Police etc then you can claim more. In fact you can claim more for any industry as long as you can prove the laundry costs were more than the fixed allowance
