There is no need to carry anything at all, most people do carry insurance documents and licences, but there is no legal requirement. That's why the police issue producers, then you have seven days to show the required documents at your local police station, or face punishment.

I was told that it's only a few more pen strokes to write a speeding ticket than a producer. So if you can prevent the officer getting his ticket pad out, then do so. The best way of doing this is to have your documents in the car, ready to show when you are pulled over. That way he does'nt need to get his ticket pad out to write a producer and so is less likely to write you a speeding ticket.

I have also heard the opposite: showing your documents at the side of the road is an admission of guilt, but taking them to the police station within 7 days is simply complying with the law.

Do people keep service books in that nice little holder? Mine was removed when we drove off the dealers forecourt.
Not just Scooby related paranoia, something I've always done. But knowing my luck if the keys get nicked the red gas bill will be in the car

I keep just my licence on me
You never know if anybody is going to break into your car
If somebody does and your documents are inside then they can be stolen
Who knows what will happen then

Never leave anything with your name and address on in the car.
I was once told a tale by a very nice officer of the law - he stopped a car for speeding and did a PNC check. The details the driver gave him checked out so he gave him the ticket and sent him on his way. He found out 30 mins later that the car was stolen - how gutted did he feel ? How much must that thief have laughed ?

I work in a Magistrates Court and see every day what happens when people don't have their documents on them. Yes with a producer you get seven days, but regularly the police lose the log book in which they record receipt when you produce and it has to go to court.
The system is that bad that you don't want it to go that far.
You really should have everything with you, licence (paper part and photocard), insurance and MOT. But don't leave them in your car- that's just stupid.
IMO.

Its an offence not to be able to produce your documents (licence, insurance cert, MOT)to a Police Officer when requested. Most times you will be given a `producer`, but this is at the descretion of the Officer.

If they lose the log book, how do they know that they gave you a producer in the first place?
