A single engine failure should not present too much of a problem especially since 558 is a very much lighter aircraft than the Vulcans originally were, having had so much cabling etc. removed during its rebuild. They could probably have continued the takeoff and done a circuit to land if the failure occurred too late during the take off to allow them to stop in the runway remaining.

When we practised engine failures at take off we always assumed a double engine failure just as the aircraft lifted off so that you had to continue flying and join the circuit to land. This was with a comparatively heavy aircraft so in this case it would have been safe to continue the take off. If however the engine fails early enough during the takeoff run then it is more sensible to stop in the runway remaining. Finningley has got a pretty long runway anyway.

I know they have spare engines but I hope this was not a catastrophic failure which has caused physical damage to the engine or the aircraft.

Update
Engine Failure Update

XH558 was scheduled to take off at noon on May 28th for a crew currency and display training flight. Just after the start of the take-off roll, she experienced problems with two of her Olympus engines. The crew immediately shut all engines down and everyone is safe. At this stage, we don't have any further information but we will keep supporters informed via Twitter (@XH558), Facebook (Vulcan XH558) and the news section (here) of the charity's website (www.vulcantothesky.org).

Unfortunately, this means that she will not be able to fly for at least two weeks, although we will not know exactly how long rectification will take until the problem has been thoroughly investigated.

We will provide further updates when we know more.

Before this incident they had a total of 6 air-worthy engines. They now only have 4 left with no chance of getting more.

Sad day.

just found this update from the XH558 facebook page:

Engine Damage Update.
The failure occurred yesterday in the two port side engines (1 & 2) on the ground as the aircraft was easing towards full power at the start of her take-off roll. She is now back in her hangar where the technical team will investigate the problem. Our initial thought is that the symptoms are very much like those experienced when something is ingested by an engine so we will be investigating all possible sources. We would like to thank Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield (RHADS) for their immediate assistance and professionalism yesterday. We should have a more detailed report for everyone fairly soon.

Is that 4 spare or 4 including those installed in the aircraft?

That is bad news, wonder if the bag was left in the intake on the port side by accident. Very easy error, it has happened in the past.

The compressor blades are very susceptible to damage if something goes in the front of the engines. They don't like birds getting sucked in either.
