Default I'll never understand car insurance......

Bought a small car in my name but got my daughter down as main user and for business use as well. I was listed as a driver as well but kept my wife off as she would be unlikely to use car and I assumed she would just be an added cost (she has her own car to use).

But out of interest I asked how much extra it would cost to add my wife to the policy. It would be £37 cheaper if I included her on the policy.

Not complaining but completely mystified.

i think it is because there are more drivers who are experience on the policy, so your daughter is less likely to be driving maybe??

That's exactly what it is.
My own insurance is cheaper by simply adding the wife.

I was told some insurance companies work of an average age if more than one driver..
So in this case 2 parents and one child on the policy will have a higher average age than yourself on your own with your child

My insurance comes down adding the wife too, and on paper I'm a better driver.

Same here - putting my wife down as a named rider on my motorbike brought the cost down. Never mind that her legs are too short to physically get it off the side stand...

You would think that someone who rarely drives the car and so is unfamiliar with its handling and where and how the controls operate etc. would be a higher risk! Maybe because they are unfamiliar they take more care and so are a lower risk? None of the above helps the understanding. As for taking the average age of the named drivers

Bearing in mind I was getting a car for my daughter to use the type of car was a fairly critical factor from an insurance point of view.

But what I found annoying was that insurance company would not give me any idea of likely premium for a particular type of car. They would only quote once thay had exact car details with registration number i.e. after I had bought the bloody thing. This was Liverpool & Victoria but is this the same with other companies?

They need to drive it though or insurance will be invalid.

After putting my other half as a named driver due to it also being cheaper i asked them why the price drop. His example was if you go on a long journey you are more likey to swop over when tired if someone else is insured on the car rather than do the full stint at the wheel and poss end up in a ditch??????? prob a load of B'$hit he told me but it brings the costs down, still would'nt let her drive my toy though!!

Yep.... that's bullsh1t

I don't understand it myself, lots of insurers we use will actually put the price UP if you add a second driver, so don't just assume it's cheaper to add someone.

The wife wrote off her old Jimny last year (slid on black ice - only car involved).

Got a new car to replace it (Nissan Juke).

Was told her insurance premium would remain the same for the current year but may go up at next years renewal.

Everybody thought she'd be looking at the premium going skywards - went up by £11 a year

We weren't complaining - but a 5 year old jimny, written off, got a cheque for £6,500 for the write off - now driving a brand new Juke (£14,000 car) and the insurance goes up by £11.

It's black magic this insurance lark !

Agreed, my wife is on my policy in case of emergencies, but has never driven the car.

I use websites like compare the market for this sort of thing, you can get quotes without specific registrations, just on make model age and engine size usually. Might not be general enough for you though?
