I lost my best friend today. RIP Sue. :(
Hi Guys,
I had the heartbreaking job of putting my dog to sleep today.
Suzie Wong was our Staffy / Labrador cross and was to us, the best dog that ever lived. Never a growl or a piece of chewed furniture in 14 years.
Sadly, she had a suspected rupture on Sunday 22nd April 2012 and was internally bleeding, so after seeking professional advice we made the decision to say goodnight to our girl and end her suffering once and for all today, the 23rd.
I held her head as they injected the lethal fluid into her veins, she looked into my eyes the whole time and as you passed away I am sure she just said "Thank You Dad"
She had a great 14yrs and we will miss her deeply. I made this tribute for her to go on my family website. Sleep tight kid. xxx

I know there are a lot of dog lovers on here so thought I would share...

I am truly gutted for you I have a little dog and I dread the day I have to say goodbye to him.
I get that some people do not understand the feeling of such love for a pet, but I also know there are millions of people who love them more than they do most humans in their lives, I'm one of them, my little dog is one of the biggest blessings that life has given me.
My friend recently lost his 9 year old Boxer dog through Cancer, he was a broken man, but I think the pain is now slowly starting to ease and the good memories of such a well loved dog are starting to come shining through. I hope you'll feel the same in time.

I won't be able to watch the video as it will remind me of my whippet that we had to have put down. Saying that it wasn't really my decision and not sure it's something I morally agree with anyway. But this helped me:
RainbowBridge.com
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....*

Gutted for you mate. Back in 2006 I posted a thread on here about the loss of my own pet staffie, Harry, who was put to sleep at the grand old age of 14. The rest is taken from a post from I made on that thread, still holds true to this day.
Feel better soon, mate.
All the best,
Paul

When you have a long term pet, you establish a bond that is unconditional and pure. When you loose them the tangible stuff ceases to be important: it's the feeling they inspired in you, witnessing the joy and appreciation for all the simple things in life that they exhibited and, of course, the good they brought out of you. At first it feels like they take that with them. Given time, however, you realise that they wouldn't want you to be unhappy and you start smiling again. When you can do that, if you close your eyes and think of them, you'll see them smiling right back at you.

I met an old chap a few years ago when with my then (first) dog. He said his old timer gave him 'the look' when its health was failing badly - the look of longing, knowing the end is near, almost asking to be taken down the vets - I didn't believe him until it happened.
That was last year...
This is this year

Putting down a pet must be one of the hardest things to do , second only to saying goodbye to a family member. Never had to do it yet but our garden is a small pet cemetery and I dread the day I have to do something like you had to.
Seems you had a great amount of good memories so you have them

Been there and endured that pain Stu. You have my sympathies.
It's unlike the pain of losing a family member. I'm not comparing the loss of a pet to losing one's parents etc.
The difference is that you 'did' it.

I'm not at all sad....
This story makes me happy, mostly because Sue was lucky enough to find someone to love and look after her for the last 12 years - and as a result live a full and happy life

Heart wrenching thread.
Made me truly sad and not much does that.
We have 3 cats and it did bring a tear to my eye at the thought of anything happening to them as they are a huge part of our lives.

Ps- Someone once said to me that you can tell a lot about a person if they like animals or not and never trust anyone who doesnt. Has stood me in good stead.

I really feel for you Stu.
Lost our 11 year old Rottie girl to something similar in August 2010. Got her to the vets in the middle of the night but it was too late to save her and she died in my arms.
Still think about her every day. She was a very special dog.
Enjoy the memories of all the wonderful times you had. Nothing can take that away.
I made a photo book - we had literally hundreds of pictures of her life with us. That helped me a lot.

Sorry for what you are going through Stu.
One of the hardest things to do, hold your pet and look into their eyes as the injection is given. I did it for both the family cat and dog when they went, one because I wanted to be with them and didn't want to let them go and secondly my parents couldn't bear to watch and so I wasn't going to let them be alone. That was when I was early 20's, I turn 40 next year and I will never forget either of their faces/looks into my eyes as they went to sleep for the last time
