Teachers moaning again...
Fancy that!
On BBC Breakfast they are discussing reducing the summer holiday from 6 weeks to 5 in Nottingham (the extra week would not be lost, just used to create an extra term). Teachers may be going on strike over it. To be fair the NUT representative trying to defend it is not being an **** like some union reps can be, but his defence is laughable.
Teachers desperately need this time to recharge apparently, and the point was made that if term times were shortened there would be less need to have such long 'recharge' to which Mr. NUT said 'fair point',

The old long school holidays is a thing from the past (harvest, mass factory shutdowns for summer, etc).
I think changing term's like this would be useful and have some ecominic benefits. It would allow cheaper holidays for families, more choice about taking which two weeks off and longer hols to places further afield. Also families wouldn't have to worry about child care for long periods.
Union arguments were laughable, though I understand why someone would want to protect the long holidays they have. But it's a changed world from 60 years ago.

agree with some of your points but we all know that if another term is created then prices for hols would just be hiked up

If I was a teacher and had to spent my working life having to try and control some of those evil and badly brought up children, I reckon I would need all of those 6 weeks to recover in order to face it all again!

Yes I think if they create fixed dates across the county for summer holidays, however I think with some flexibility different local authorities will move dates around by a week here or there. We see that now with some half terms differ by a week. So maybe less of a price hike?

My mrs is a teacher and she'd be happy to have them shorter, no probs.
And tbh teachers don't get six weeks off. The amount of marking the wife has to do after work, weekends and in holidays is quite unbelievable. No way I could, or would want to teach.
