Car with private plate
So i've seen a cheap car to replace the scoob
It had a private plate on it R5 ***
but the dealer said he's taken that off and and put on its original plate
the thing is the "original" plate is also a private plate T666 ***
Now ive seen the car and its very nice and seems a honest car
ive also seen the log book which states the T666 reg
But i'm not sure where i stand, i was expecting to see a 54 plate reg on it if he was sticking the original plate back on
also if i buy the car, am i spose to have some sort of certificate to prove i own the plate, as well as the v5 to prove i own the car?
any help ?

So he hasn't put the "original" plate back on then?? Not sure why he would go to this effort rather than reverting back to the original reg (as there are costs involved)!
When a private plates is put on a vehicle you have to send your v5 to dvla who will give you a replacement v5 in the private plate reg. before this happens the private plate cannot be applied (legally) to the car. What reg does the v5 have on it ?
Also be aware to use the correct reg when hpi checking etc as you could end up wasting the cost of a hpi (if say he hasn't officially changed the reg with dvla yet)

the v5 has the T666 reg on it, which shows up as the correct car on a quick initial HPI check (not tried the full yet)
although he still has the old plates on it at the moment
im hoping this is something silly/easy to sort, and not hiding something more dodg
as the car itself is really nice, clean etc
if i can get the original plate from the dvla for free, and flog the T666 job i guess ill be happy
but im not sure i can sell the T666 reg as ive not seen any certificates to say i'd own it etc

the dealer would have had to have the T reg on retention and paid the transfer fee for it (unless he had the paperowrk given to him as part of the sale)
usually the car would have just gone back to the original registration (the one when the car was first purchased), it does seem a little strange.
As said if you HPi it you will see the transfer history of the number plates also.

"The rights to transfer or retain the registration number pass to the registered keeper of the vehicle displaying the registration number."
so the reg is now owned by the owner of the vehicle, ie person on the v5?

just done a HPI
Date of first registration in the UK 24-Aug-2004
The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 22/02/2012
R5KJE was applied to this vehicle on 24/08/2004
So I assume when the car was purchased from the dealer the customer wanted the private plate put on it straight away/
Which then got taken off when the dealer recieved it (he said he'd had it about a month)
