Blackberry going back to its roots......
and abandoning its consumer business.

Shame, as hardware-wise, the phone suited me very well.
Certainly doesn't look very good for Rim.

The train wreck of their financial results was fairly obvious and they have been struggling for a while. Aside from the UK market where teenagers love BBM, they only do well in markets in UAE etc.
I see that Dell have stopped selling smartphones as well though TBH never seen anyone with one

Anyway
It is a shame about RIM, I had a curve around 2 years ago and it was a good solid handset. Both my parents have blackberrys and are very happy with them, I think there will still be a market for them but not at the top end of the market as they cannot compete with the best stuff from apple, htc and Samsung

Mmmm. I would say that the consumer market was the only place they were making any inroads. The corporate world companies are dropping them due to pressure of their users wanting something better (in their eyes) like an iPhone or Android.

They wouldnt have made a loss if they didnt try to compete with the tablet market. The handsets are very good and stronger than most on the market for heavy useage.

They're not dropping the consumer market. See .... http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-...market-1074485 ...
So there .....

Patrick Spence, SVP and MD of global sales and regional marketing for RIM, said:
"The claim that RIM has said it will withdraw from the consumer market is wholly inaccurate. "Whilst we announced plans to re-focus our efforts on our core strengths, and on our enterprise customer base, we were very explicit that we will continue to build on our strengths to go after targeted consumer segments.
"We listed BBM, as well as the security and manageability of our platform, amongst these strengths."

its a shame, i love my blackberry and i have the playbook, the playbook is great but i think what was the final nail in there coffin was the fact they kept changing update dates for the playbook 2.0, think it was like a year late.
thing is now, when im due an upgrade what phone shall i get next.

The sooner they die the better. Current products are, frankly, **** from a business perspective. Lost count of the number of lost calls, lost signal, etcetera when iOS and android phones on the same network have full signal.

So, what happens now? Do Blackberrys stop working from 1st April 12.00 midnight? Harsh, I have to say. I know a lot of people with Blackberrys. They look as if they are holding an overcooked thick toast in their hands, and scratching the burnt bits out with their thumb nails when they fiddle with the buttons to text or to read their emails. Sooner they convert to glamorous, sleek, and sexy Apple , better it is for them.
