I did. I even left all my make up on. What if George turns up in my sweet dreams. I have to look a bit tidy for him, you see. What a shame he didn't.

Mam is very fastly spoken "madam" word, isn't it? You would do it if you are in a terrible hurry. Its like calling decorator and carpenter a decanter, or even a denter. But, it can mean a man i.e. a dad+a mum = a mam. This way, a good day wish becomes kindly inclusive to the dads, too. But dads don't get special treatment and gifts e.g. wine, chocolates, flowers, Amazon vouchers, Chinese meal etc. They have to wait until their Father's Day comes. Tough, isn't it?

No idea, Swati. I've just always used 'Mam' as it's what I was taught, I assumed it was just a Northern thing.

You never have this complication with the male species, its either Father or Dad.

mom,mam,mum,mother.bloody hell.

I hate the way my mother still treats me like i'm a little kid,ex forces traveled quite a bit,can look after myself. But when it comes to her,i'm still her little boy.

+1

In my mothers eyes I am still 10 years old although I am almost 40. If I am leaving her house she will still tell me to put my hood up if it is raining, tells me to go to bed early when I am tired etc. My mother in law is ten time worse - my wife and I took her on holday about 5 years ago, she insisted that she should look after our passports in case we lost them!!!

Where would be be without them though.

I was just fooling around as usual, Lisa, but I now understand that Mam a regional thing.

Well, whatever they call you, as long your children call you with love, their call is always welcome.

My kids usually call me mummy", mum or mom. My son is quite consistent with these terms, but my daughter is another story. If I can't hear her for one reason or other, she calls me "mother!" to get my attention. If I am still not listening, she will shout: "SWATI!", which makes me laugh, and respond instantly. She is like that with her father, too. If he goes off on one with "Listen, you need to get your head down at right time, darling", "Listen, you want to get that assignment finished, kiddo. You don't get good grades by partying and drinking all night, you know.", she says, "STEPHEN! Listen to me! I know." This makes her father's ego subside like some feeble fire with torrential rain, and he bursts out with laughter.

And does she leave lippy all over your chops, that you don't notice until you're down the pub with your mates?

Same here, although I'm not quite that old.

My Mam, even now, still walks on the roadside edge of the pavement when we're out together. I think she thinks that she'll save me should a car mount the path.

Also, a couple of months back, when it was really quite cold, we went up to the coast and she put a spare hat, scarf and pair of gloves in the car as she knew I'd probably not bother to come prepared. She was right.

For these, and plenty other reasons, I wouldn't change her for the world.
