It depends on the product. In some companies product managers are nothing but go to market people: The ones that prepare the sales force, services etc... in others they will shape the destiny of the product.
Can be a good job, you have to be good at influencing people. As you typically have no direct resources but have to cajol, threaten and sometimes just beg other parts of the organisation to do their bit to get your product to market.
