Winter Bites Back Soon
After an exceptionally mild end to February, the weather looks to turn increasingly unsettled and colder this weekend from the west, with some wintry showers and widespread frosts by night returning. The cold snap continuing into early next week, with more overnight frosts and dry, sunny but cold weather by day on Monday and Tuesday. But the weather looks set to turn milder again from the west on Wednesday.
For now, much of Britain will have another mainly dry and mild day with sunny spells. We have some dense fog patches this morning though across central southern and southeastern England, but these should clear through the morning, with much of England and east Wales enjoying some sunny spells -which should lift the temperature to around 12-14C this afternoon, perhaps 15C in London. Always more in the way of cloud across SW England and west Wales though, so a bit cooler here with temperatures 9-12C. Further north, we will see a weather front slip slowly southeastwards across Scotland through the day. This front is bringing cloud and mainly light rain across northern Scotland currently, which will then spread southeast across central parts of Scotland and northern parts of Northern Ireland this afternoon, southern Scotland and southern parts of Northern Ireland will probably stay dry with some bright or sunny spells until the evening. Temperature reaching 13C in Edinburgh and 14C in Belfast.
Mainly dry and frost free overnight across England and Wales, dense fog patches forming again across central and southern areas where skies are clear. Cloudy across Scotland with some patchy light rain continuing to sink southeastwards. For Friday, cloud and light rain across Scotland in the morning should clear during the afternoon to brighter skies. England and Wales will have another mild and dry day with some sunny spells developing once morning fog patches clear, though becoming increasingly cloudy across southern parts through the day.
Then over the weekend, unsettled on Saturday for all areas, as a cold front bringing a spell of rain and squally winds moves eastwards across all parts, probably clearing eastern areas in the evening followed by colder and clearer conditions from the west, with wintry showers in the NW and a widespread overnight frost. Wintry showers in the north and west on Sunday, bringing snow over high ground, generally dry, sunny but cold across central and eastern areas, a risk of more general rain, sleet and perhaps even snow across southern England, though some uncertainty over this potential for now.
