Cool My old robot

My old Infernal contraption robot that we used in robotwars, those were the days.

Video is a bit low quality how cameras have moved on these days.

I thought the programme was lame.. The house robots could completly distroy anything and they were never allowed to.... So disapointing..

But even he's a fan of Robot Wars"

Nice one, I used to watch that programme quite a bit.

Were the entry rules limiting? I take it there were maximum sizes and weights to work to. Was there a restriction on power of weapons etc?

IIRC Infernal contraption was in the later series. I was in series 2 and 3 with Disruptor and Excalibur. Disriptor got through to the heat final by pure luck, then got knocked out by Panic Attack which went on to win that series. Excalibur got knocked out in the first battle, starter motors driving the rear wheels drained the battery in about five minutes. There was a great atmosphere in the pits, everybody happy to help out with any problems. Philipa Forester was ok too. I think the only restriction was 80kg, we got away with being a little over. Great fun, wish we were in on the first series and met Clarkson..

I always fancied dressing up in a tin foil suit and running around with a sledgehammer pretending to be the ultimate robot.

Used to love this. Remember watching it on Fridays back in the day starting at 6:45pm wasn't it?

Razor, Chaos2, Hypno-disc and Pussycat were my favourites

Thought the red one was some guys from Northern Ireland.
The weight limit in later series was 100KG ours was 97kg but their scales were a bit wayward, we originally had 2 24V motors driving the spinning weapon drum but had to remove one because their scales did'nt read the same as the calibrated one we used at imperial!
The house robots varied in weight from 90 to 600 kg so there had to be some "rules". to put it in context cost wise hardware on the Infernal Contraption was about £3K but factor in the crew build time and your looking at £30k all in, we were lucky as it was a supported "student" project.

and here it is attacking a filing cabinet!

agree quality programme... apart from the dodgy husband & wife teams who wore fetish gear and a lot of super nerds who probably haven't been outside the house since the show was axed! The buzz at school the day after hypnodisc first appeared & smashed the ****e out of the competition was memorable!

Found this on youtube , this is where we took some extensive damage from 259 the disc on this was powered by a 6hp motor, but our first strike took out one of its drive belts and vee pullys so it got knocked out in the next round. If only we had got both belts!

Here`s the two we made, Disruptor from season 2

Lost the heat final against Panic Attack ....... Here`s Excalibur from season 3

Not too memorable as it lost its first battle against Centurion

The budget was pretty low on both robots as most of the parts were begged or borrowed. I fabbed the shells in work from sheet steel. The chassis for Disruptor was Dexion with a wiper motor on each wheel. The most expensive part was the battery which had to be a sealed gel type, understandably they didnt want acid spilling everywhere during a battle.

Yea, apparently they had a hard time getting it from Ireland on the ferry. Security made them take it to bits because they thought it might be a bomb.
