consult the dealer, it can be done, although it might delay your pick up date if the dealership drag heels.

I'd rather get your 12 plate and then put your cherished plate on in say a month or so if the renewal of the V778 is not imminent.

If you are buying a new car why has it got a reg plate on it ?

It should be registered from new with your personal plate

My thoughts as well, get the dealer to earn his money.

The only way I can think is to do it the long way round.....get the car as yours with the reg plate that it has and then swap it and pay all the charges

If the car isn't brand new it's already registered, so you're just transferring that registration to you. You'll then have to transfer the plate to the car.

If you were buying a new, unregistered car, it could be registered with your plate from new - I did that with my daughter's Mini a few years ago.

Yep obviously its registered already mate but would obviously still require to register myself as the new owner before I could assign my own p/plate to it !!

just wondered if there was someway off registering everthing together ?? no probs just means waitting a week or so until the V5 comes back in my name - only to be sent back again when the new plate is assigned by the local DVLA office !!

your retention doc already covers the charge for transfer, do it the long way round, and ask your insurance company if they'll sting you for an admin fee

Go to your local DVLA office when you have bought the car and have the new registered keeper section(Green bit) together with your retention document and any other related paperwork and you can have it all done at the same time, they will send you a tax disc and V5 in your name with the new reg on and then you can put your plates on the new motor, If the plate you want to put on is already on retention in your name you have already paid the fee to put it on a car, If it is in someone else name there is a £25 charge, Did something simaler last year

As Gazz says, best to go personally to the DVLA office with all the docs and they will transfer your own plate on the spot. Keep your old plates because when you sell that car you can put the private plate back on retention and they will give the car its original reg number again.
