Was a brilliant programe. What a lucky g!t he got to fly her.
There is another Lancaster (NX611 Just Jane) which is going to be made air worthy. The people who own her have had to buy 4 new Merlin RR engines and need to get new landing gear made. The air frame has been looked at and has passed inspection and also has loads of flying hours left in her.
This is NX611 here>>>>>https://www.scoobynet.com/members-ga...just-jane.html

Isn't there an airworthy one in Canada too?
I thought it was good, a lot of time was given to the boys that actually flew them
It also gave Bomber Harris a fair shake too, which doesn't often happen these days

That always upset my dad too.
I think RAF Bomber Command lost a huge number of men, around 44%.
And the average age of bomber crew was VERY low........if we assume the pilots were in their later 20's, the others must have been lads.
And the average life expectancy? Six missions, wasn't it?
Only 1 in 40 survived a full tour and they had to do TWO full tours before being taken off active duty.
Must have taken guts to do it night after night........

A friend of mine was a probation officer and was in court in front of an old magistrate speaking on behalf of an 18 year old youth who had committed a minor crime.
My friend appealed for leniency as the youth had fallen in with a bad lot and now wanted to make use of his A levels and apply to go to university.
The old magistrate said, "when I was 18 years old I was flying Lancaster bombers over Germany".

Just up the road from the Blue Bell pub featured in the program (well worth a visit itself !!) is Thorpe Camp, which has a 'mock-up' of a Lancaster fuselage/cockpit used in a film (can't remember which one......)

the nissen hut containing it wasn't open when I last visited -- so "check before travelling" !!
