Sending money abroad.
Since we've had the house in France, and an account to servioce it, we've always used bank transfers, unless I've been able to take cash...once a VERY frightening sum in €500 notes in my jeans pocket.
Today I tried out HiFX.
I will use them in future.
I don't need to go to my bank.
I paid them £9 for the transfer.
My bank charges £18 MINIMUM. Some charge up to £40 per transfer!
I got a better rate than the banks/post office or travel agents give.
Today was difficult as I had to set it up. Next time will be a few clicks, a bit like setting up a payee on an internet bank account.
HTH someone else.

I've used HiFx to pay my daughter's deposit for her room in France, the thing I found was that if the amounts are smaller the charges get bigger and the exchange rates get worse.
She needed a French bank account so got herself a Caxton FX currency card. She has to put £150 minimum at at time on it but can then withdraw as much or little as she needs with no extra charges so just withdraws cash and pays it into her French account.
I appreciate that her requirements (effectively just 400 Euros rent per month) are probably less than the sums required to service a house but it is another option and IIRC correctly the Caxton FX rates were actually better than the HiFX rates at the time.
You can only withdraw 200 Euros a day which could be a pain - not for her as her bank is only about a minutes walk from her house!
Obviously this is only really of use if you are physically there to withdraw and pay in the cash

My money goes the other way (euros to Sterling) but I always use IFX as the rates are about 3-4p better than doing it through the bank and they only charge 10pound for the pleasure

I`ve used these http://www.smartcurrencyexchange.com/ A bit scary depositing money into their account first but it went through to my U.S. account no probs.
