£50 quid/sq foot for a house extension?

I'm thinking of extending my current house as may prove more economical than trying to move with the rapid increase in house prices. I've heard that a budget of about £50/sqfoot for a single storey is about right for an average build specification. Does anyone have any experience of the costs for single and 2 storey building work.
