Default Scunthorpe - Swindon whilst I have 10 mins.

Boooring 2-10 shift so gonna ask whilst I have a few minutes

I'm off to Swindon on Saturday from Scunthorpe and need to be there at 12.30 or earlier. Driving obviously. What's the best route? M1 all the way or M1/A429?

Going by Satnav but hoping to avoid any nasty traffic.

TIA

Andy

M1 all the way is a very long way round. I'd probably go for M1 then A249, especially if you're in something that can overtake. If you want to stick to motorways most of the way M1-M42-M5 then cross country from Gloucester is probably your best bet.

Damn, they're onto me

Haven't a very good signal on my phone so loading maps is a pain. Will have to look later. Used Google buy the way. Think the M1 way was 199 miles door to door and M1/A429 185 miles.

Hmm, just tried popping it into google maps with a weak signal on my phone. When it decided to load it came back as 210 miles and nearly 4 1/2 hours!

Definitely M1-A429 (mainly Fosse Way). I live in Swindon and do Doncaster on a regular basis and always use this route (I've tried M1-A42-M42-M5 and it's not as quick and further). A429 is a good road, especially in something with a bit of "go".

Enjoy!

Thanks. Come's up shorter distance but longer time. I'm pretty sure on a Sat it would even out over the motorway jams etc around Birmingham. that's my concern so would try set my Satnav to the shortest journey instead and set off early incase.

Econo-run down there so I feel the full benefit of the remap hooning it home

It's only a remap on a TD04, decat, Walbro and panel filter so not expecting the world, but more poke at higher boostage

Ignore the times that the satnav gives - mine normally says I would take > 3hrs for Swindon to Donny, but going A429 I can easily do it in 2.5 (satnavs dont account for very long, very straight roman roads!).

Being more accurate, I find the best route is M1-M69-A46-A429-A419.

That's what came up for me, hopefully Satnav will play ball and I'll use this route.

Many thanks

Vote for this. Can't remember the exact route, but I used to do M62, M18, M1, M69, then I used to turn left at the round about near Coventry airport and head down there for a while, before chucking a right on to the back roads, some of which were, iirc, the Fosse way. Go through some really nice places, one town in paticular stood out for me, Burford. Great drive, more so if you have a '3rd gear overtake weapon'. Just watch out for the scammers.
