Right they used to change once a year in August.... but that all changed in 1998.
So the last August reg change was in 1998 which was when S reg appeared..(for example S788 YHT)
T reg was then March 1999, V was September 1999.
W March 2000,
X September 2000,
Y march 2001,
then things changed again (just to keep you on your toes) September 2001 the format changed to YH51 YTG where the 51 is now the age rather than the first letter... 1 = 2001 and 5 = September..
March 2002 = YH02YTG
2 = 2002 and 0 = March...
Also I think that there are a couple of differences between English and Irish number plates in that some letters are not used here which I believe are in Ireland. Following are not used U, Z, I, O, and Q is reserved for Kit cars only. Hope that helps.
I have an Irish plate on my English car TAZ **** when * is a number.

Edited to format so a bit easier to read.

Cheers JGM, Scoobylover & Bioforger,
I live in The Republic of Ireland where in 1988 (I think) our registration format changed from letters to the year for example:
Jan - Dec 2000: First two numbers that appear on all regs are 00
Jan - Dec 2001: First two numbers that appear on all regs are 01
Jan - Dec 2001 First two numbers that appear on all regs are 02 etc
Then the letter of the County appears so if you live in Co Dublin (which is anywhere in Dublin) and if you have registered your car in 2002 then on your reg it will show 02-D-(Your choice of numbers)
For Example:
Most Subaru owners would go for example 00-D-555 or 00-??-555
Most Porsche 911 owners go for 00-D-911
There are 26 different counties in Ireland that use this format.
Counties in Ireland that have a city in them get only one Letter like Galway for example the letter G appears. (I am still mad to get 03-G-187 LOL)

Well it used to be what the last three letters were the place..
then in the new format I believe it is the first two letters that represent the county and the last three letters are just random.
I think my plate must be from North Ireland?
I bought a car that had been imported from Japan via Ireland and the plate was put on in Ireland and when I registered it here I ticked the Keep plate box on the form I just keep transferring the plate each time I change my car.
My neighbours think I have a brand new car but in actual fact it is 6years old... I can keep up with the jones's without paying loads.

Yes that's a Northern Irish registered car
The six counties in the North use the same format as England as they are part of Great Britian and the UK.
That's a good Idea with the registrations , If I was to buy a car in England or the UK it costs 25% of the Value of the car (secondhand or New) to register it here in Ireland it's called "Vehicle Registration Tax" or VRT and it's a big Irish Rip Off. To buy a P1 in England new and bring it over here and register it costs €63,490 Euro

I hated it when they did that, changed to every 6months..
My one and only new vehicle was my bike bought August 1998 S reg and it only seemed new for 6months as T came out 6months later...
Doh!
The last of the real registrations...........
