Default SN Chefs - Le Cruset or similar...

Going to invest in a pan/dish that i can use on the hob and in the oven and Le Cruset is the obvious choice. Not sure i fancy paying £130 for the 30cm casserole dish though

Does anyone use anything similar that does the same job, cheaper!

And there was me thinking you were referring to your ***** with your username.... it's because you're a keen cook..... I'm almost dissapointed!

How about something from here, they usually have decent discounts this time of year too......well, they will if you wait until tomorrow

Stainless steel can be used on the hob and in the oven, and is lighter. I have both.

I know this is going to sound a bit **** but for some reason i think oven cooked food tastes so much better in china/earthenware based dishes rather than stainless.

Thanks, they only seem to have Le Cruset that does this job, maybe the will go on sale but it seems no one really discounts le cruset.

And I think you'd be right, no idea why either.

As for Le Cruset, I have a full set of their pans, skillets, ovenware that cost me a fortune in 1993.

They are still all pristine and are fantatsic to use.... their weight/construction means they retain an even heat and do actually cook food better in some instances.

Expensive intial outlay I grant you, but you won't be buying another in 5 years time so over time worth every penny!

Amazon also usually discount Le Cruset at this time of year. No guarantee they will this year though.

Le Cruset all the way. I bought a full set when i moved to cyprus after me and the ex-wife split up. Ok i got mine cheap but i swear by them. Still in mint condition 8 years later and still quality kit. I had stainless/copper bottomed stuff before but i prefer the cast stuff now....

GF bought her mum a casserole dish as part of her Christmas present, looked at Le Cruset - the big one - around 6.5 litres think it was the best part of £160. We then went to Costco, 6.7 litre casserole dish, French made, basically identical to the Le Cruset one but in red £55 (that's including the VAT)

Yeah, you're **** alright!

Cast iron is much better for retaining the heat, and for slow cooking. I love my Le Creuset stuff, but it is heavy. Don't buy the Aga equivalent, as they don't have ***** on the lids, so they're difficult to lift off, when you're wearing oven gloves.

Bought all my Crueset stfuf from here:

http://www.panters.uk.com/cat/5/kitc.../398/cast-iron

Also bought the Crueset TNS frying pans as well. Bloody expensive but just so much better than anything else we have had.

Thanks for the posts.

The sainsbury one looks good value but think i am going to invest in the le creuset one as the quality should give me a long loyal service.

Wise man, these wannabe copies are all very well, but you are best off with the proven brand in this case.

I had a le cruset wok which the mrs dropped on the kitchen floor and broke a handle off.
It was nice and bloody heavy but if I'm honest it was a pain to clean and the real wok I've got now is probably better for day to day use at about 1/3 of the cost
