Default Binoculars - Anyone know anything to offer advice?

Hi there,

My mother is a keen walker. She must cover over 30 miles over a weekend in areas with great views. She is also considering doing some monster walks abroad next year.

So the question is what will be best suited for her? Im guessing Compact in mind.

Im a novice dont forget so I need some help please.

Thanks,
Rob

Get the best you can afford, but dont snub the cheaper makes for the sake of a name. I have a pair of opticron and they are 25% performance, and at 75% of the parents Nikon monarchs.

Best suggestion I can make is you take your mother to somewhere like In Focus (link at the bottom), let her choose and just pay for them.

Forget buying online, Binos are very personal. Go to your local camera/optics shop and try a few.

I've got some Opticron travellers, brilliant binos. Nitrogen filled so they don't mist up, rugged and optically very good. That said a pair of Leica or swarovski compacts would be the ultimate christmas present and will last a lifetime.

Ok thanks for the replies.

As for the women over the road, then I would need this as these is nothing glamorous for miles!

Budget is unknown, but I guess £300 seems about right?!?!

Thanks for the brand names, but what is it I look for in terms of function/options/size etc?

Cheers
Rob

Your budget is £300, wow, thats some serious binoculars at that price, just for a hobby/walking/bird watching etc

i was told to get the smaller the lens that touches your eyes, the bigger the lens you see out of, so,say, a 10 x 50 pair

For that type of use, small and light would be best, otherwise she will never have them when she needs them. Waterproof for the outdoors. 10x magnification should be enough. Image stabilisation not necessary IMO.

Get these and spend the other £260 on a camera, walking stick, waterproof jacket, boots etc.

It is unwise to get too high a magnification since without a tripod it is difficult to see what you are looking at very well because of the natural movement of the hands while holding them.

A magnification or around 10, certainly not too much more would be best while she is out walking.

If its primarily bird watching you want an 8x, 10x is ok, but less comfy. The more expensive binos will have better eye relief too, so she'll be able to look through them for longer without getting tired eyes.

8x25 means 8x magnification with a 25mm objective lens

Generally speaking the bigger the objective the brighter they will be.

If you could stretch to a pair of Leica Trinovids you'll be amazed how good they are. I sold a pair YEARS ago to a customer and she still thanks me when I see her
