Christmas spirit at work
Had to laugh today in work, we got a memo stating that if we receive any gifts from customers or traders that we cannot take them. Instead we can either decline the gift or bid against other staff members for whatever the gift is.

Why!!!!. Lots of my Clients give pressies to the people they deal with the most. They would not be happy to know their gifts were being "raffled" to others.

This has never actually become a real problem at work as we're never (edit vary rarely) offered gifts or tips from customers, you're lucky to get a bloody thank you off most of them.
Anyhow, if this was to happen, the policy is that we can't accept any tips (money) but I'm not 100% sure about gifts. As I've typed this, I seem to recall, vaguely, that a member of staff was given a box of chocolates.
My personal feeling on the subject is that, if a customer is happy for the service they have received and wish to give a little Christmas present, then that should be acceptable. In the case of shops for instance, if they are generally happy with service as a whole, they would buy a general present which could be shared, if however, they concentrate on one person perhaps because they have stood out from the rest or have been a regular assistant, then it should be fine for them to receive a personal gift. The same would apply in other workplaces, to me anyway. Why shouldn't it be ok for someone to get a little christmas present if a customer thinks they are deserving of it?

In my work, it won't be, and it shouldn't be ok. Gift receival/exchange has a potential to contaminate/harm the professional, psychotherapeutic relationship with my vulnerable mental health clients. Nothing apart from the agreed payments (as contracted) for the service are acceptable. Accepting gifts and socialising with the clients will be classed as "bent" practice.

Our company sent a missive round similar to this one a couple of years ago, we suspect because certain members of staff, being *****, never got anything
We have an internal raffle now, for anything that's handed in, but a lot of us tend to just schedule a important visits to certain suppliers
It's not appreciated the other way round either
When you've spent the year putting the work in, to then see the workshy tw@ts you've spent the year carrying being given free access to your perks, it doesn't inspire feelings of goodwill

I get the odd gift from my customers all year round. When it is a case of beer, I share it out in my office. If it is a bottle of spirits, then it comes home with me!

We try and give our best clients something but a lot of them wont accept as they work in the public sector. However they prefer a few beers and a night in the lapdancing club anyway
I dont agree with it but someone has to take a bit of lappy for the team

I can see your point, CD. But, one of the Companies I work for is in the building trade and have many staff. Hence why they only send gifts to the people they deal with the most. I suppose it would be fair to put them all under the office Christmas tree and share on the last day of work (I'm on about the gifts, not the staff )
