Default Taking water out the tap for granted

We've had no tapped water since 3pm yesterday due to a burst large diameter trunk main about 4 miles away. The water still isn't on and what a bloody nightmare.

Can't flush toilets, can't do washing up, wash hands, shower blah blah blah. 2 adults, 3 kids and numerous pets all without fresh water. The local supermarkets are all out of bottled water due to the sheer number of people this has affected, tens of thousands due to 3 post code areas being hit in a very large sprawling county town.

How long should it take to dig a hole in the road and replace a large piece of pipe work? Surely not the 18 hours it has so far? The latest from me phoning up again this morning was it would be back by 8.30 but no still no water. The website of the water company hasn't been updated since 11pm last night and their telephone message since 6pm last night. Totally incompetent. They insist the engineers having been working through the night but I just don't get how it can take so long.

The schools are all shut because the kids can't go to the toilet except they only told parents once they'd battled rush hour traffic to get to the schools only to be turned home.

When your tapped water stops you suddenly realise just what a mess it causes not having it.

Been there as a kid, never bothered me or my parents.

Might have something to do with the 40 gallons of rain water in storage in the back garden may of helped.

Strip washes, pan boiling water etc etc.

Obviously, if there is snow outside, then that makes things a lot easier.

Nightmare isn't it.

Had a five day water cut in Spain right in the middle of summer....40degrees, no pool, no airconditioning and no water and 50miles from the coast.

Back in the UK we also had three days of no water or power in our street as a water mains burst and they damaged the electrics trying to get to it. Lucky we have gas, so at least we could cook and have heat (200watt £20 inverter plus car battery connected to the boiler ), neigbours on the other hand were all-electric and had to live on take aways and a thermos with boiled bottled water donated from us.

You should have tried living in Cheltenham after the great Tewkesbury flooding of 2007 took out the water treatment works. No water for nearly two weeks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Un...loucestershire

You've been without it for a day, I have no sympathy

We are on a well which has been dry for over two months. No mains water.

We use water collected off the roof for cleaning and flushing the toilet etc. It works fine with a bucket poured towards the rear of the lavatory pan.

I get 5 litre bottles of spring water from the supermarket for £1 a bottle.

Its just a matter of getting a system together and you can manage although it is not very convenient. You might be able to get a water tank of fresh water FOC from your water company if you complain to them

Finally back on and all toilets flushed

Les that sounds a nightmare and the one thing that is a huge downside to rural living - lack of mains services. I want to live rurally but couldn't do without mains gas/leccy and water.

Good for those that do then and i'll have to find somewhere rural that is one of the lucky areas then as not even a mile down the road from us they don't have a gas supply and plenty of houses there. I find that shocking that in this day and age they don't run mains gas to areas of housing so close to a very large town.
