Can't believe what I have just seen today..... the local pound shop has gone into liquidation.... that's it.... we're all doomed when the only stalwart of the high street (outside of charity shops) left has gone too.
Run for the hills!!!!

LOL, well allegedly the town in questuion (Rawtenstall) has the most number of empty shops in the whole of England although the fact that the town centre's 70s shiopping arcade has been closed for demolition probably skews that figure.
It is grim though Luckily I live a good way outside the town. Phew!

Rawtenstall has become locally infamous for its deserted and boarded-up shopping centre, in the middle of the town. Since 2003, various deals have been said to take place regarding reconstruction or refurbishment [11] , but so far, no work has commenced. The latest 'deal', in February 2011, between Rossendale Council and the owners of the Rawtenstall centre, Ashcap, is said to "improve Rawtenstall town centre" if it is finalised. [12] The last surviving shop in the Valley Centre, Rawtenstall Post Office moved to nearby Kay Street in early February to try and spur on the development. In 1993 the first professional beauty salon in Rawtenstall opened in Ormerod Street and still trades today as Polished Beauty Clinic.

It's because you can't buy any thing for a pound these days the way the economy is these days. The only pound shops that are doing well that I know of are of the lap dancing bar variety!

The whole country is going pikey, pound shops, more tattoo studios, sell your gold place, tanning salons, bookies, bargain booze, pound bakeries, Cash Converters, Greggs, payday loan places, cash for crash scam legl places, charity shops, fast food etc, all looks grim, traditional retail has had its day, 80/90 and the rot really set in about 2000, all the electrical shops dissapeared, record shops, loads of clothes shops etc. People used to think Wollies was a bit low rent, positively upmarket comapred to the high st now.

All the major retailers have moved to out of town retail parks now. The buildings in town centres generally don't have the capacity anymore, plus parking in a town centre is neigh on impossible in some towns and cities.

i live in whitworth, rawtenstall centre is practically deserted, even mac donalds have pulled out of rochdale town centre, so you know things are bad when that happens,
rochdale has pawn shops, cash gen/converters. lots of booze shops, tbh the place is a joke, a really horrible place.
