Speed camera vans ??
Hi folks
Do you get any percentage or a couple of MPH grace say over a speed limit or is it a case of 70 is the limit and that's it 72 and your done ?
Reason I ask is, I came to Wales for the week my Range rover sport, I had the cruse control set for 70 for the motorway and kept it on that most of the way, I passed a few camera vans on the way down and never gave it a second thought. I got to Wales, and onto some A roads and had enough of the crappy land rover built in satnav and pulled out my tom-tom, and noticed that the gps speed is a few MPH faster than what the needle says, so at 70 I am doing 72/73. Obviously I was not intentionally speeding but by the difference between the two I am according to the GPS speed.

Your speedo should only ever over read, it should not (legally?) under read your speed for obvious reasons.
My speedo over reads by ~10% so allowing a grace of 10% gives an indicated 84mph before getting ticketed (hopefully).
Have you changed wheels or tyres? that could put your speedo out of calibration.

Even if you were correctly actually doing 72mph, you're not going to get stopped or ticketed. Pretty sure that 50% of motorway drivers go faster than 70mph/flow of traffic.
Only time Ive ever been worried was when I was going about 80/85mph in the fast lane which was the flow of traffic, and a police bike came right up behind me so I pulled into the middle lane and he looked across to me and mouthed the words "slow down" and the police bike carried along behind the next car and did the exact same thing... basically telling everyone to slow down.

Yes and no, it does have different wheels on it than standard, but I dont know anything about them they came on it when I got it, so as far as I am aware they are the correct size but maybe not then..
I hope I am ok the whole point in getting the Rangerover was to not speed and just cruise

Pretty sure you will be fine mate, most of the camera vans that park up in North wales are now ANPR, and looking for tax/insurance/mot dodgers.
that came from the traffic cop that pulled me on monday evening on way home from work, wasnt doing anything wrong, think he was a scoob fan himself, he said " as long as your not driving like a tw@ you can get away with upto about 85mph" round here,

ACPO guidelines are that you don't get prosecuted for anything under the limit + 10% + 2mph. These are though only guidelines so you could be done for anything over the limit (unlikely though).
Some areas in England & Wales offer Speed Awareness Courses for people who were exceeding the limit - but not by too much. So up to the limit + 10% + 9mph is likely to see you offered a SAC. This costs between £60 and £100, takes up 4 - 6 hours of your time, but doesn't result in points on your licence.
Edit - just seen that you are Scotland. Forget the SAC option as no forces in Scotland offer this so far.

It depends on your local police force. They don't have to follow ACPO guidelines and can do you for +1 mph on the limit if they feel like it.
That would be unfair because they cannot guarantee the measuring devices to that accuracy. However people have been done for such a small amount over the limit.

The gps speed is often out and isn't 100% acurrate. If it is the newer Tomtom then it does that map prediction. So when it looses signal with won't come up staright away with it being lost it will carry on estimating oughly where your are. This I think also has an effect on the speed. I know I would trust my speedo rather then my Tomtom.
