Tax Disc and Exemption

Tax Disc and Exemption
Suddenly remembered today that my tax disc runs out tomorrow!
Damn I thought now I'm going to have to queue up at that ****ty place they call the "post office"............
But Hurrah for common sense! there is an exemption if you apply online for 5 working days from expiry to allow the disc to be delivered in the post
I'm sure I had this a few years back and there wasn't an exemption even though you could apply online and at the time I thought that was daft!
Doesn't apply though if you try to renew after your existing expires!!

I'm pretty sure in the early days of online applications, they didn't allow an exemption period for not displaying the disc, even if it could be proved you'd renewed in time before the expiry of the old one. Or at least that's what I was told by some grumpy Welsh b!tch when I phoned them to check once, around 6 years ago.

I have been driving my "Caterham" kit car all summer, I did not even bother to put the tax disc on it (have had it stolen befor now)
just pinned it to the notice board in the kitchen

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

Glad you posted this because it reminded me, our new task disk came last week and needs to be changed.
Last year I forgot to do it, drove around for about 10 months before someone pointed it out.

I tried taxing the Golf online yesterday, it's been under SORN since the end of August, and they would only let me tax it from the beginning of October. Going to have to queue with all the p!ss-stinking oldfeckers at the post office tomorrow now

Just renewed mine over the phone I find this is even simpler than online, only because I've not seen my registration document in years though and you need it to get tax online

are you sure it isn't just saying 10/12? Which means it's taxed until the end of the month...
If they're sending you a 09/12 disk then I'd be annoyed.
(ignore me if this is completely obvious and already thought of....)

You dont need the V5 for online, you just need the reminder which has a long number on it which brings up all your vehicle details etc... this comes to the reg keeper address via post.
Re the "grace period", most police will give you 2 weeks, or even upto a month but its not a police matter, the "ticket" (CLE26) just goes to the DVLA and its upto them to fine etc, however the police have the power to seize an untaxed vehicle on behalf of the DVLA, but will not seize a vehicle unless its over a month past the expiry.
Either way, its so easy to tax your car now using the online service there is not really any excuse for not taxing. I would actually prefer if I could buy a 2 or 3 year tax disc. Would make things a lot easier. Of course the govt wont do that as they like to put it up each year
