Winter Tyres. Anyone bothering?
As above. Debating whether or not to invest in some. If we get another bad winter, they could be a good investment. Though, I'd hate to go to all that expense, only for us to have a mild winter.
Who's buying some this year?

Yup....
Have them on a spare set of wheels ready to go on the Forrester again this year...
Superb last year, the only downside being that I managed to get into work when others couldn't (and they all lived closer to work than I did)...
Wish I'd bought them years ago

Need new rear tyres on the alfa as they just about legal but the I got a set of part worn winter tyres for the front with great life left in them that should see me thru to Feb/March.

Yup first time this year. I've got an X5 on order and the rears are 315 so I dont fancy riding a 2 tonne sledge. I've not bothered on the wife's mini although have got a set of spare 17's for it, on the basis we'll have one car mobile if it gets bad.

Never mind winter Tyres - I've just bought a winter shed of a 4x4 for the wife to use, for £1500 less than the winter tyres for her car cost.
I also have AT Tyres on my pick up

Unfortunately for her car shed have to have 18" wheels as opposed to the standard 19's.
So a set of wheels and Tyres are over £3k!
So even spending that sort of money on winters doesn't stop the fact that someone could slide into her (or obviously vice versa).
Rather spend the cash on a fully serviced and MOT'd Shogun Pinin.
Even with tax and a years insurance it's less than £2k.

I got to try my Snow Socks last winter in The Peak District - from me. Being limited to 30mph on them means they aren't for long distances but are ideal as an easy to carry, get out of jail card IMHO.

I just picked up a rav 4 for my winter car but I may try and swap it for a Shogun before it gets really cold. I am expecting a run to the maternity ward in January and I need a car that can guarantee my passage through all weathers. The rav 4 is not doing it for me as a rugged off roader and snow car.

I'd like some winter wheels as well as tyres but the expense makes it too crippling... plus if it gets really bad I'll just pop the CX tyres on the bike and cycle everywhere

We live on a hill 1/2 mile from the main road and for the last 2 winters we've had 2-3 foot of snow in the lane. Once ploughed by the farmer there remained several inches of snow & ice for almost 4 weeks!
The local council (West Lothian) has no interest in ploughing or gritting the minor roads so given that the wife & kids need to drive daily for work & school I consider winter tyres a good investment!
On snow the winter tyres allow you to accelerate, brake & steer almost like normal. For the rest of the time they offer much better grip in cold and/or wet conditions.
If the 996 was so good in the snow why are winter tyres mandatory in Germany during snowy conditions???

MrsD has a Mk1 Honda CR-V, even on normal tyres, that's fantastic in snow, way better than I was expecting it to be
It's also old, cheap, and already battered, so I don't think we'd notice if someone did slide into it

Dont see how it costs more tbh, you can only have one set on at a time.
Too early for me yet but bought first winter set last year, wouldnt go back to running all season jobbies.
