We are going to get 80 mph on motorways, but the other side of the coin is that we get more 20 mph limits in urban areas.

Personally I know of some streets near me where 20 mph is appropriate due to them being especially tight, having blind corners, cars either side etc, but I'm not sure how they are going to decide where to put the 20 mph limits in.

I'm all for an 80 mph limit but I seems absurd that this is going to 'boost' the economy. It will use more fuel up sure, is that good? More revenue for HMRC I suppose?

Can diesel hatches do 80 mph?

Won't make much difference on the stretch of the M25 I use unless they can persuade people that lanes 1 and 2 really exist. So many people just seem to stick to the third lane even when there is nothing inside them and we end up with a queue of cars using the 4th lane to get past them.

Think we should have a system like France where when it's sunny and dry then 80mph but when it's wet and raining it's reduced to 70mph.

I think increasing it is good but need to make sure people don't start speeding more and increasing higher (illegal) speed

My car appears to be more economical at 80mph than at 60-70mph.

Certainly agree with more 20 zones, especially by skules.

What worries me more is a further reduction in NSL country roads - many have already been cut to 40 or 50 mph.

The problem with 80mph speed limits is instead of what they do now on a 70 mph speed limit, i.e. drive around 80ish they will then drive around 90ish instead.

Couldn't agree more. Does my bloody head in. They need to use the big electronic signs to tell people to move over to the left when possible. Lane 3 has now become the new middle lane and it is INFURIATING!!

will this mean that instead of fixed penalties being issued at anything over 90 that will now go up to 100?

either way it makes no difference to me as all the motoways i use its unsafe to go any faster than 75 ish as if your in the first lane there are to many polish lorrys turfing up our roads and not paying any tax for the pleasure, if your in the second lane theres to many of pre mentioned lorry drivers pulling out without looking and taking people out and way to many idiots in the way hogging the lane at 65mph and if your in the 3rd lane there are to many idiots in rep cars thinking its ok to sit 2 inches off your bumper even though your going as fast as the car in front, while they continue to flash their lights at you with one hand and stuff their face with a chedder ploughmans with the other.

I must admit i like it when im in a work car and they are tailgating while on their phones and speeding and i give a flash of the blue lights, oh they all turn a off colour of white and green haha, *****

Well, I'll be on the M6 tomorrow and "may" do 80 to 85mph. The car's a Litchfield Type 20 with suitable brakes, so it's clearly not inappropriate - quite different from doing the same in a 1960s Austin Healy with drum brakes (ie when the 70mph limit came in).

80mph is fine. I'm ok with 20mph around schools and residential areas, but wouldn't like to see it replace all current 30mph limits.

Hello fellow type 20 owner quite right, it certainly is around time we need an increase in the limit but god forbid what half the driving population will do with the increase, most cant even handle the current limit everyone seems to do 10mph under the limit on all roads round here for no reason

I think it would be an error to raise the limit. Of course it would be natural to increase driving speeds significantly beyond 80 and where we have crowded roads as we so often do, I think that would be dangerous.

It is one thing to say that cars handle so much better now but it makes no allowance for the fact that human reaction times and general driving ability have not increased with time.

I dont think people will use it to go massively faster as to be honest you are going as fast as the rest of the traffic and thats 80 - 90 on a free flowing motorway, the fuel prices will put many off even doing 80 and to be honest much aboove 90 really isnt a comfortable speed for a lot of cars (Superminis, Vans etc) on British motorways a lot of the time, everybody will anticipate the increase in enforcement and the fact that if you go over 100 you are f*cked anyway if caught.

I will just do my normal 85/90 as I always have if conditions allow and the car is up to it.

I read a stat somewhere that doing over 60 mph uses 40% more fuel due to drag etc!!!

I currently sit at around 80mph - conditions dependant and with the new limit being 80mph I won't feel a need to sit around 90mph just means I have less chance of being knicked. And my 5th gear kicks in at 80mph which is weird!

as for 20mph it should only be for areas outside schools etc.. If spunk flies out under 30mph then is is safe to hit a child? lol sorry I had to put that - thanks sickapedia...

death/accidents from speeding is a very low percentage of how car accidents occur. Bring it up to 80, think it will be a good idea. I drive 80 now, so at least I'll be within the law when they do. I wouldnt think most people will go to 90+ because the limits have been raised.

I'd suggest making it similar to the German Autobahns.

No need for a speed limit in normal conditions, but have overhead variable speed limit signs to warn of problems ahead.

LOL @ the people saying they currently travel at 80 mph when the current limit is 70...most will do 90mph when it is raised as the 'risk' threshold remains the same. People will not change the way they drive. If they feel 10mph over is acceptable now it will be then.
